Chapter 17 - The Net Closes

United States Attorney Robert Vance was a towering, granite-faced man of sixty-five with steel-gray hair and the exact same piercing blue eyes as his late brother Arthur. He sat behind his massive desk on the tenth floor of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse, listening in absolute silence as Marcus and I laid out the entire timeline.

For three straight hours, federal forensic accountants combed through Arthur’s leather ledger. IT specialists reviewed the contents of the USB drive, verifying the unedited footage of Julian forging his father’s final testament while Douglas Sterling stood beside him, laughing with a tumbler of scotch in his hand.

When the presentation concluded, Robert Vance leaned back in his leather chair, laced his fingers together, and exhaled a long, measured breath.

"My brother was a stubborn old fool," Robert said, his deep baritone rumbling across the room. "He thought he could handle Douglas Sterling in the private sector without dragging the federal government into his life. He paid for that arrogance with his life. But he was right about one thing."

Robert leaned forward, his gaze locking directly onto mine with fierce intensity. "He was right about you, Claire."

"Can you arrest Sterling?" I asked. "Can you stop him from coming after Emma?"

"Claire, this isn't just an arrest," Robert replied, tapping the open ledger. "This is a full-scale Rico indictment. Sterling hasn't just committed mail fraud and child endangerment through Julian. He has orchestrated transnational money laundering, witness intimidation, and attempted murder on a state highway today. The driver of that gray sedan just broke under interrogation. He gave up Sterling’s private security coordinator forty minutes ago."

Marcus leaned in. "What about Julian and Brenda?"

Robert’s expression hardened. "Julian will be transferred to a maximum-security federal facility. His cooperative plea deal from his previous embezzlement trial is completely shredded. He will be facing twenty-five years to life as a co-conspirator under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Brenda... Brenda gave us the key. Because of her sworn deposition and physical evidence turnover, my office will recommend witness protection and non-custodial probation."

"And Emma’s trust?" I asked, the only question that truly mattered to my soul.

"The trust is inviolable," Robert declared firmly. "Under federal seizure laws, Douglas Sterling’s assets will be frozen by midnight tonight. The four-hundred-acre parcel will be placed into a court-ordered, federally monitored conservatorship until Emma reaches the age of majority. No one—not Julian, not Sterling, not any creditor—will ever be able to touch a blade of grass on that property."

Relief washed over me so violently that my knees buckled. Marcus caught my arm, steadying me as a heavy sob tore from my throat.

The nightmare was ending. The empty plate, the humiliation, the shadows following my daughter—the law was finally drawing a titanium ring of protection around us.

"Go home to your daughter, Claire," Robert Vance said gently, his stern face softening for the briefest moment. "Take my personal security detail with you to your sister's farm. Tonight, the FBI executes forty simultaneous search warrants across New York and New Jersey. By breakfast tomorrow, Douglas Sterling’s empire will not exist."
