Chapter 18 - The Takedown

The news broke at 6:00 AM the following morning.
Sitting at my sister Hannah's kitchen table with a steaming mug of tea, the television screen showed helicopter footage of federal agents in tactical gear swarming Douglas Sterling’s sprawling thirty-acre estate in Bedford, New York.
Live footage captured Sterling being led out of his grand double doors in handcuffs. The once-untouchable titan of New York real estate was wearing a disheveled silk bathrobe, his silver hair uncombed, his face contorted in an ugly, venomous sneer as cameras flashed and reporters shouted questions from behind the iron gates.
The news anchor’s voice rang clear:
*“In a stunning early morning raid, the Department of Justice has unsealed a forty-two-count federal indictment charging prominent developer Douglas Sterling with racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate exploitation. Federal prosecutors allege that Sterling orchestrated a multi-year scheme to defraud the estate of the late Arthur Vance, including calculated efforts to strip custody of an eight-year-old child from her mother to seize high-value real estate assets. Several co-conspirators, including former high-ranking executives and incarcerated associates, are facing additional felony charges...”*
Beside me, Hannah set a plate of fresh scrambled eggs and toast on the table. She looked at the television, then looked at me, a proud, fierce grin spreading across her face.
"You brought down an empire, Claire," Hannah said softly. "You and a floral studio budget."
"Arthur brought it down," I corrected her, feeling an overwhelming sense of closure. "I just refused to let them break my little girl."
Just then, the sound of padding footsteps echoed down the staircase. Emma appeared in the doorway, wearing her oversized bunny pajamas, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"Mommy?" she mumbled, yawning. "Why is Aunt Hannah's TV so loud?"
I quickly clicked the remote, shutting the screen off before the news graphic of Julian's mugshot could flash across the broadcast. I stood up, walked over to Emma, and pulled her into a tight, warm embrace, burying my face in her soft curls.
"Just some boring morning news, baby," I whispered, holding her so tightly she let out a tiny giggle. "Are you hungry?"
"Starving!" Emma declared, pulling back with a bright, sunny grin. "Can we make blueberry pancakes with extra whipped cream?"
"We can make anything you want," I laughed, kissing her nose. "As much as you can eat, forever and ever."
For the next four weeks, life transformed into something resembling paradise.
The federal court moved with astonishing speed. Sterling’s assets were liquidated under federal receivership to pay off millions in restitution to his victims. Julian was formally sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Brenda entered a witness protection program in the Midwest, disappearing into a quiet, anonymous life under a new name.
Emma and I returned to our townhouse. We redecorated Emma’s room in soft sage greens and lavender, filled the patio with blooming winter jasmine, and spent our weekends visiting Hannah’s farm to ride horses. The shadow that had loomed over us since that humiliating afternoon at the banquet hall had finally evaporated into the mist of history.
