Chapter 10 - The Shockwave Hits the Group Chat

The digital bomb dropped at exactly 2:15 PM.
I was sitting on the couch, tentatively trying to type a work email with my left hand while Natalie coached me through breathing exercises for my shoulder pain, when my phone—which was sitting face down on the coffee table—suddenly erupted.
It wasn't just a vibration. It was a continuous, rhythmic, frantic buzzing that sounded like a swarm of angry hornets.
*Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping.*
Notifications were stacking up so fast the screen froze. My phone began to lag under the sheer volume of incoming messages, emails, and social media tags.
Natalie reached over, picked up the phone, and turned it around so I could see. The family group chat, which had been filled with vitriol and accusations against me just two hours ago, was now experiencing a total, catastrophic meltdown.
*Aunt Linda:* "DELETE THIS. DELETE THIS RIGHT NOW. WHO POSTED THIS?"
*Uncle Greg:* "Paige... what is this audio clip? Is this real?"
*Cousin Mark:* "Holy shit. She literally planned it..."
*Mom:* "Everyone calm down! This is a deepfake! Clara, tell them it's a deepfake, your sister is innocent!"
Natalie tapped on a link that redirected to an Instagram reel posted by *The Nashville Exposé*. The caption read: *“EXCLUSIVE: The real reason Nashville’s wedding of the year was called off at the altar. We obtained the unedited audio feed from the groom’s mic. Listen to what the bride *really* whispered before shoving her injured sister into the pool.”*
Attached was a crisp, crystal-clear 30-second audio snippet.
First came Paige’s voice, dripping with casual malice: *"Watch this. I bet the clumsy bitch trips over her own feet. Hope she ruins her dress, I want all eyes on me today anyway."*
Then came the splash, followed immediately by Paige’s shrill, unmistakable laughter: *"Oops! Just a joke! God, you're so pathetic, Clara!"*
And finally, the deep, rumbling voice of Julian—the groom—cutting through the chaos: *"Get your hands off her. The wedding is off. I am done."*
The comment section on the post was exploding at a rate of thousands of comments per minute. Public opinion had shifted with the violent force of a tidal wave. People who had been tearing me apart in Paige’s comment section hours ago were now leaving scathing, brutal remarks on her page. *“Monster.” “Sociopath.” “You deserve to be alone.”*
My phone rang loudly, flashing a name I hadn't expected to see for months, if ever again.
*Julian.*
I stared at the screen as it lit up my living room. My heart hammered against my ribs, the pain in my shoulder suddenly overshadowed by a massive surge of adrenaline.

"Are you going to answer that?" Natalie asked quietly, watching me with cautious, supportive eyes.
I took a deep breath, my thumb hovering over the green accept button, realizing that the old Clara—the one who hid, who absorbed, who stayed silent—was officially dead and buried at the bottom of a swimming pool.
