Chapter 24 - The Price of Silence

I let out a short, dry laugh that held no humor whatsoever. "Apologize? To me? Julian, where was your apology during the rehearsal dinner when Paige mocked my physical therapy? Where was your apology when she laughed while strangers pulled me out of the country club pool? You stood right beside her and chuckled because it was easier than rocking the boat."

Julian’s face flushed a deep, shameful crimson. He didn't look away; he took the verbal blow with a bowed head, accepting every word as absolute truth.

"You're right," he whispered, his voice thick with genuine remorse. "I was a coward. I watched her tear you down for two years, and I stayed silent because it wasn't happening to me. I thought, *Hey, at least I’m not the target.* But yesterday, when the mask finally slipped all the way off... I realized I was marrying a monster. And by staying silent, I was just as guilty."

He reached into the pocket of his heavy wool coat and pulled out a thick, heavy envelope, sliding it slowly through the narrow gap of the chained door and onto my entryway table.

"What is that?" I asked, eyeing the envelope suspiciously.

"It’s all the documentation," Julian said quietly. "Every text message, every email, every recorded family group chat where your parents and Paige conspired to manipulate you, gaslight you, and cover up their financial misusing of your grandmother’s trust fund. I downloaded it all from our shared cloud storage before I locked her out of the accounts."

My breath hitched slightly. The trust fund. For years, my parents had claimed my grandmother’s inheritance had vanished into legal fees and market crashes—an excuse they used to deny me college financial aid while funding Paige’s endless shopping sprees.

"Why are you giving me this?" I asked, my voice dropping to a cautious whisper.

"Because Paige and your parents are already planning their counter-attack," Julian said grimly. "They’re panicking. They’re drafting a narrative claiming you had a psychotic break, that you fabricated the voicemail using AI, and that you sabotaged the wedding out of bitter jealousy. They’re planning to ruin your reputation before you can ruin theirs."
