Chapter 3 - Blood Money & Ghost Accounts

The Coronado terrace descended into pandemonium.

Several guests in the back rows stood up, whispering frantically into their phones. Reporters who had been invited under strict non-disclosure agreements regarding the wedding photography began live-tweeting the explosive scene from their tables. The private event was turning into the corporate scandal of the decade.

"Turn off the power! Somebody cut the cables!" Sofia shrieked from the ground, kicking her legs free of her emerald hem as two of her society friends recoiled, refusing to offer her a helping hand. "She’s insane! She’s slandering my family! I’ll sue you into the gutter, you little bitch!"

Camila didn’t even look down at her. She stood on the marble steps like an empress reviewing the ruins of a conquered province.

"You won't sue anyone, Sofia," Camila said calmly into the microphone. "Because the legal fees alone would require assets that haven't been frozen by the United States Department of Justice."

A sharp collective gasp rippled across the lawn.

At that moment, the heavy wrought-iron gates of the garden courtyard swung open with a resounding iron clang. Four individuals in dark blue windbreakers with gold block lettering across their backs walked briskly down the central aisle.

**FBI: FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION.**

Behind them walked a tall, lean man in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, carrying a slim leather briefcase. He had sharp, intelligent gray eyes, silver-streaked dark hair, and an air of lethal legal precision.

Julian Vance. The most feared corporate defense attorney on the West Coast, and the head of Camila’s private legal counsel.

Mateo stared at the approaching federal agents, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He backed away from Camila, bumping against the floral arch. A shower of white gardenia petals fell onto his shoulders, mocking the wreckage of his wedding day.

"Mateo Valdés?" the lead agent, a square-jawed woman with a badge displayed on her belt, asked as she reached the altar.

"This is a mistake," Mateo muttered, his hands trembling as he wiped sweat from his upper lip. "This is an internal corporate dispute. We are handling it within the family. My fiancée is just emotionally upset—"

"I am not his fiancée," Camila stated with absolute clarity. "The engagement is null and void. The contract presented to me at this altar was signed under duress and attempted extortion. And the documents currently projected on that screen are certified copies of evidence submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation forty-eight hours ago."

Julian Vance stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and extracting a sheaf of stamped court orders. He handed one directly to the federal agent, then turned to Mateo, handing him a crisp, sealed manila envelope.

"Mr. Valdés," Julian said, his voice smooth, cultured, and merciless. "You are being served with an emergency federal injunction. All bank accounts associated with your name, including secondary shell accounts registered to Solstice Holdings, Boreas Logistics, and Valdés Maritime, have been placed under federal receivership. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order prohibits you from approaching within five hundred feet of Camila Benítez, any facility owned by Halcyon Technologies, or any of the condominium properties in question."

Mateo tore open the envelope. His eyes scanned the legal jargon, the seals of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, and the signature of a federal judge.

"You planned this," Mateo whispered, his eyes wide with horrific realization as he stared at Camila. "The wedding... the guests... the press... you set this whole thing up."

"You chose the venue, Mateo," Camila said, her voice dropping into a register that only those on the altar could hear. "You chose to invite two hundred of the most influential people on the West Coast so you could publicly bully me into surrendering my life’s work. You thought your social status was an impenetrable shield. You thought that because I grew up in an orphanage in East Los Angeles, I would always feel small in your mother’s presence."

Camila took one deliberate step toward him. Mateo flinched, shrinking back against the gazebo.

"You forgot one simple truth, Mateo," she whispered, her gaze piercing his soul. "I built this empire from nothing. You merely inherited a name that your father spent his entire life trying to protect from your incompetence."

Sofia clawed her way to her feet, her face purple with rage. "You ungrateful tramp! We gave you everything! We introduced you to the governor! We brought you into the country club! You would be cleaning tables without the Valdés name!"

Julian Vance turned his icy gray eyes upon the older woman. "Mrs. Valdés, I strongly advise you to remain silent. The micro-transfers used to fund your lifestyle over the past eighteen months did not originate from your late husband’s trust. They originated from the Halcyon Technologies employee pension reserve—an account specifically classified under federal law as protected under ERISA. Embezzlement from an employee pension carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in a federal penitentiary."

Sofia’s mouth snapped shut. The purple rage drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a sallow, sickly gray. She swayed on her feet, clutching the back of an empty chair for support.

The lead FBI agent touched Mateo’s shoulder. "Mr. Valdés, we have a warrant for your electronic devices and financial records. You are required to accompany us to the federal building downtown for formal questioning."

"No... wait! Let me call my attorney!" Mateo cried, pulling away from the agent’s grip.

"Your corporate counsel resigned twenty minutes ago, Mr. Valdés," Julian Vance informed him with a razor-thin smile. "Halcyon Technologies’ board of directors has retained new representation. You will need to hire a public defender if your personal accounts cannot clear the retainer for independent counsel."

A chorus of camera shutters clicked in rapid succession. The press was having a field day. Mateo Valdés—the golden boy of San Diego tech, the scion of the Valdés family—was escorted down the white-carpeted aisle, past his frozen guests, flanked on both sides by federal agents.

His head was bowed. His tuxedo was disheveled. The petals of the flowers he had picked out clung to his shoes like dirt.

Sofia stood alone in the aisle, abandoned by the guests who were already gathering their coats and rushing toward the exits, eager to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal.

Camila turned back to the microphone.

"To our guests," she said calmly, "the bar will remain open for another hour. Please enjoy the refreshments. But as for the wedding... the ceremony is officially concluded."

She set the microphone back in its cradle, lifted the hem of her cathedral gown with both hands, and turned toward the service entrance where Julian Vance was waiting.
