Chapter 8 - Cornered Beasts

The afternoon sun was sinking behind the rolling hills of Rancho Santa Fe, casting long, menacing shadows across the five-acre estate of the Valdés family.
Inside the multi-million-dollar villa, pure chaos reigned.
Suitcases were thrown open across the imported Persian rugs in the master bedroom. Sofia Valdés was frantically stuffing diamond necklaces, gold bullion, and bearer bonds into Louis Vuitton duffel bags. Her hair was completely wild, her silk robe soaked in sweat.
Downstairs, Mateo stood in the marble foyer, screaming into his phone.
"What do you mean the private jet was grounded?!" Mateo shrieked. "I wired the twenty thousand dollars this morning!"
"The wire was flagged by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Mr. Valdés," the charter dispatcher replied flatly. "Your tail number has been placed on an FAA ground-stop order. No aircraft registered to your family may depart from any airfield in North America."
Mateo threw the phone against the front door, shattering it into plastic fragments.
"Mother!" Mateo screamed, running up the sweeping marble staircase. "The plane is gone! The feds have locked down Montgomery Field and Lindbergh! We have to drive to the border! We have to leave right now!"
Sofia emerged from the bedroom, hauling two heavy duffel bags. Her eyes were wide with animal panic.
"Where is Carlos?" Sofia demanded, her voice shrill. "Why hasn't Carlos reported from the Coronado office?"
"Carlos is in federal custody!" Mateo yelled, grabbing his mother’s arm. "Didn't you see the news? Camila set an ambush! The SWAT team took down the entire crew! They’re tracing the hit order directly back to your burner phone!"
Sofia froze. The duffel bags slipped from her fingers, dropping to the floor with a heavy thud of gold and jewels.
"No..." Sofia whispered, her face draining of all color. "No, that’s impossible. Carlos doesn't talk."
"Carlos is facing twenty-five years for armed federal burglary and terrorism!" Mateo cried hysterically. "He talked in twenty minutes! Mother, they are coming here! We have to take the Range Rover and cross at Otay Mesa before they issue the red notices!"
Suddenly, the low, rhythmic thumping of heavy helicopter blades shook the glass skylights of the villa.
A dazzling cone of white light sliced through the living room windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
Over a high-powered loudspeaker, a voice echoed across the manicured lawns:
**"SOFIA VALDÉS. MATEO VALDÉS. THIS IS THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT AND THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. THE PROPERTY IS SURROUNDED. EXIT THE RESIDENCE WITH YOUR HANDS RAISED."**
Mateo let out a whimper of pure terror, collapsing to his knees on the landing. "It’s over. God, it’s over..."
"Shut up!" Sofia snarled, her voice dropping into a rabid, cornered fury. She turned and ran back into the master suite, heading straight for Marcus’s antique gun cabinet. She smashed the glass with a bronze statue, reaching in and pulling out a silver-plated .38 revolver.
"Mother! What are you doing?!" Mateo screamed, crawling toward the bedroom door.
"I am not dying in a federal cage!" Sofia hissed, loading six rounds into the cylinder with trembling fingers. "I built this empire! I buried Marcus, and I will bury that little bitch before she takes what is mine!"
Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors did not splinter under a battering ram.
They simply unlocked.
The front doors swung open smoothly. Walking into the marble foyer was not an FBI assault team.
It was Camila Benítez.
She wore her crimson suit, her posture commanding, her eyes completely devoid of fear. Flanking her were four armed federal marshals and two sheriff's deputies, their weapons drawn in low-ready positions. Behind them stood Julian Vance and Arthur Pendelton, holding the unsealed orders of the Supreme Court of California.
Sofia walked out onto the second-floor mezzanine, the silver revolver raised in her shaking hands, pointing it directly at Camila’s chest.
"Get out of my house!" Sofia shrieked, her voice echoing violently down the stairwell. "Get out, you filthy orphan! You have nothing! You are nothing!"
The federal marshals immediately raised their rifles, lasers snapping onto Sofia’s chest.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it NOW!"
Camila didn’t flinch. She didn’t step behind the marshals. She stood in the center of the foyer, looking up at Sofia with cold, unyielding pity.
"Put the gun down, Sofia," Camila said, her voice clear, calm, and terrifyingly steady. "It’s not your house. It never was. Marcus bought this land with his own sweat. And under the certified will unsealed two hours ago by the state supreme court... this house, the land, the shipping company, and every asset in this room belongs to the Marcus Valdés Foundation."
"You forged it!" Sofia screamed, her finger twitching on the trigger. "Marcus loved me! He would never leave me with nothing!"
"Marcus knew you poisoned him, Sofia," Camila said.
The word hung in the air like poison gas.
On the floor beside his mother, Mateo froze. He looked up at Sofia, his bloodshot eyes widening with a horror that eclipsed even his fear of prison.
"What... what did she say?" Mateo stammered, his voice barely a whisper. "Mother... what did she say about father?"
"Shut up, Mateo!" Sofia spat, never taking her eyes off Camila.
"The toxicology reports were in box 714, Mateo," Camila said, her dark eyes shifting to the trembling man on the floor. "Marcus knew your mother was putting digitalis in his tea for four months. And on the audio tapes Marcus recorded... you knew about it, didn't you, Mateo? You sat in that very library and told your mother that if Marcus didn't sign the transfer by Friday, you would 'let nature take its course.'"
Mateo looked at his mother’s face. In Sofia’s twisted, sneering grimace, he saw the monstrous truth that he had spent five years pretending not to see.
"You... you killed him," Mateo sobbed, clawing at his chest. "You told me he had a stroke! You told me it was an accident!"
"He was standing in the way of our future!" Sofia screamed, completely unraveling into madness. "He was weak! Just like you!"
Sofia tightened her finger on the trigger, aiming directly between Camila’s eyes.
"Say goodbye, Camila."
Before Sofia could depress the trigger, Mateo lunged forward from the floor.
With a desperate, hysterical shriek, Mateo grabbed his mother’s knees, tackling her onto the marble landing. The gun discharged with a deafening crack, the bullet tearing harmlessly into the vaulted ceiling, sending chunks of ornate plaster raining down into the foyer.
The federal marshals surged up the stairs like a black wave.
Within six seconds, Sofia was pinned to the floor, her wrists wrenched behind her back, the cold steel of federal handcuffs clicking shut around her manicured wrists. Mateo lay crumpled against the mahogany railing, weeping uncontrollably into his hands, curled into a fetal ball of pure, pathetic ruin.
Camila watched from the bottom of the stairs.
She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply adjusted the lapel of her crimson jacket, turned to Julian Vance, and gave a single, decisive nod.

"Evict them," Camila said quietly. "And change the locks."
