Chapter 5 - The Desperate Counterstrike

By midnight, the news of the altar ambush had exploded across the global tech and financial press.

*WALL STREET JOURNAL:* **The Secret Billionaire: How Camila Benítez Exposed Mateo Valdés in Front of 200 Guests.**

*THE SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE:* **High Society Shock: Valdés Family Dynasty Crumbles Amid FBI Raids.**

Social media was in an absolute frenzy. Clips taken by guests had gone viral on TikTok and X, racking up over forty million views in eight hours. The phrase *"No habrá boda"* had become an overnight anthem of defiance against corporate bullies and toxic in-laws.

Inside the high-walled compound of the Valdés estate in Rancho Santa Fe, the atmosphere was not triumphant; it was apocalyptic.

Sofia Valdés paced the length of her expansive marble terrace, clutching a glass of scotch with white-knuckled fury. Her hair was disheveled, the elegant emerald gown replaced by a silk robe stained with liquor.

On the other end of her encrypted satellite phone, a voice spoke in cold, accented English.

"You failed, Sofia."

Sofia froze, her breath catching in her throat. "It was an ambush! The girl... the girl had federal agents waiting! She knew about the accounts!"

"We gave you five years to secure the San Diego coastline properties," the voice replied, devoid of any human warmth. "Marcus refused us, and we resolved the Marcus problem for you. Mateo assured us that this little tech girl would be obedient once she wore his ring. Now the entire financial network is compromised. The FBI is inside Mateo’s servers."

"We can fix this!" Sofia begged, her arrogant facade completely shattered. "Mateo was released on bail two hours ago! Our lawyers are preparing a counter-suit! We will claim Camila embezzled the funds herself and framed Mateo out of jealousy! We have contacts in the media—"

"You have nothing," the voice cut in mercilessly. "If the FBI finds the Aegis maritime contracts, Sofia, you will not survive long enough to reach a federal courtroom. Clean this mess up. Silence the girl. Or we will silence you both."

The line went dead.

Sofia slammed the phone against the marble table, shattering the glass screen. She let out a guttural shriek of rage, tearing at her hair.

The front doors of the terrace swung open, and Mateo stumbled out into the cool night air.

He was a broken shell of the man who had stood at the altar eight hours earlier. His tuxedo was gone, replaced by a rumpled shirt and dark trousers. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin pale and slick with cold sweat. His bail had been posted by a shady bail bondsman using the estate’s secondary mortgage as collateral.

"Mother," Mateo croaked, sinking into a patio chair. "It’s over. The FBI took my passport. They seized my personal laptop, my phone, the keys to the Revuelto... everything. Camila has locked down the entire company. We can’t even pay our utility bills tomorrow."

Sofia strode across the terrace and delivered a stinging slap across his face.

The crack echoed against the stone walls. Mateo gasped, holding his reddened cheek, looking up at his mother with wide, terrified eyes.

"Get up, you pathetic coward!" Sofia snarled, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "We are not going to prison! Do you hear me? We built this name! Marcus was a weak, sentimental fool, and I didn't spend thirty years tolerating his moral lectures just to let an orphan girl from East LA take everything away from us!"

"What are we going to do?" Mateo cried, his voice trembling. "She has Julian Vance! She has sixty-eight percent of the voting shares! The board voted unanimously to terminate my contract without severance!"

Sofia’s eyes narrowed into twin slits of pure malice.

"The public doesn't know the whole story yet," Sofia hissed. "Camila thinks she won because she humiliated us in front of the press. But the public loves a victim, Mateo. Tomorrow morning at eight AM, we hold a press conference outside the federal courthouse. You will look broken. You will weep. You will tell the world that Camila Benítez is an emotionally abusive, controlling sociopath who manipulated Halcyon’s board while you were grieving your father."

"Will that stop the FBI?" Mateo asked skeptically.

"No," Sofia whispered, a cold, sickening smile spreading across her lips. "The press conference is a distraction. While the reporters are focused on you... I have already dispatched Carlos and his men."

Mateo’s eyes widened with horror. "Carlos? Mother, no! Carlos works for Aegis! If Camila gets hurt—"

"She isn't going to get hurt," Sofia said softly, though the cruelty in her eyes said otherwise. "She’s going to disappear. And once she’s gone... as her legal fiancé under the common-law residency laws of California, you will file an emergency petition to take control of her estate. Including those condominiums. And including box 714."

Mateo stopped breathing. "Box 714? How do you know about the box?"

May you like

Sofia’s smile turned razor-sharp. "Because Marcus tried to hide it from me five years ago. And I’ve been waiting for that little bitch to dig it up ever since."
