Chapter 13 - The Ghost of the Past

"Clara..." Julian’s voice was strained, thick with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher. Was it betrayal? Shock? Disbelief? He knelt down beside me on the cold floor, his large hand gently resting on my shoulder, though his eyes were fixed on the birth certificate scattered among the snow. "Look at me. What is this?"

Tears blurred my vision, hot and stinging against my cheeks. The phantom chill of the ice water bucket from two years ago rushed back, freezing my veins, making it impossible to draw a full breath.

"It's... it's not what it looks like," I choked out, my fingers trembling as I clutched the edge of the photograph. The image of the infant—my firstborn child—stared back at me with unseeing eyes.

"Oh, spare us the sob story!" Clara shrieked, taking a step forward, her boots crunching on the fallen snow that had blown inside. "She gave him away! Sold him, for all we know, to pay off her father's gambling debts! And when my mother found out, she kept the file just in case your little golden-boy wife ever tried to bite the hand that fed her! My mother might be in a cell, but she gave me this exact location before she was transferred. She said, 'If we go down, we take Clara down with us.'"

Julian slowly stood up, towering over Clara with a dark, menacing aura that made even the unhinged sister step back in genuine fear. He didn't yell. His voice was dangerously calm, carrying the lethal precision of a surgeon's scalpel.

"If you ever step foot on my property again," Julian whispered, his voice slicing through the cold air, "I won't just file a restraining order. I will personally spend every waking hour and every cent I own to ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison where sunlight is a myth. Now. Get. Out."

Clara swallowed hard, her manic bravado finally faltering under the sheer weight of Julian's intimidating presence. She glared at me one last time, a twisted smile curling her lips. "Enjoy your little secret, counselor. Let's see how long he loves you when he finds out what else you're hiding."

With a final, spiteful scoff, Clara turned on her heel and sprinted back out into the blinding snow, disappearing into the dark, howling night as her car doors slammed shut and the engine roared to life.

The heavy front door swung shut with a resounding thud. The lock clicked into place. But the warmth of the home was gone, replaced by an suffocating, icy silence.

I remained kneeling on the floor, clutching the photograph of the child I had been forced to leave behind all those years ago. My chest heaved as silent, racking sobs tore through my body. I waited for Julian to pull away. I waited for him to look at me with disgust, to realize that the woman he married came with a dark, scandalous baggage far worse than anything the Millers had fabricated.

Instead, warm arms wrapped around me, pulling my trembling body tight against his chest.

"Julian..." I sobbed, burying my face in his shoulder. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to keep it from you. I was just... I was so terrified you would look at me the way they did."

Julian didn't pull away. Instead, he pressed his face into my hair, holding me tighter as the winter storm raged outside.

May you like

"Shh," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Tell me everything, Clara. From the very beginning."
