Chapter 23 - The Butcher's Blade

The freezing wind howled through the shattered doorway, carrying howling vortexes of snow that instantly dusted the living room floor with a layer of white frost. Martha stood framed in the ruined glass doors, chest heaving, a terrifying grin stretching across her cracked, bleeding lips. "Surprise, you little bitch!" she screamed over the roar of the blizzard, taking a deliberate step forward onto the hardwood, leaving bloody, muddy footprints in her wake. Julian stepped in front of me, his stance wide and balanced, his weapon leveled dead-center at her chest. "Drop the knife right now, Martha, or I will put a bullet through your heart without a second thought," Julian warned, his voice devoid of any human warmth—it was the voice of a federal prosecutor delivering a death sentence.
Martha stopped, her deranged eyes darting from Julian’s cold, unyielding gaze down to the barrel of the gun pointed directly at her. For a split second, a flicker of genuine panic crossed her ravaged face. But then, her head tilted at an unnatural, bird-like angle, and she let out a shrill, mocking cackle that cut through the howling wind. "You think a gun scares me, counselor?" she sneered, taking another slow step forward, the rusted blade catching the dim light. "I've already lived in hell for months. I lost my empire, my dignity, my entire life because of you two parasites! I have nothing left to lose. And a woman with nothing left to lose is far more dangerous than death itself."

Before Julian could pull the trigger—knowing that killing her, even in self-defense, would trigger a legal nightmare and distract from our peace—Martha lunged with shocking, unnatural speed. She didn't charge Julian; instead, she feinted to the left, dropping low and using the momentum of her heavy winter coat to sweep past him with terrifying agility. Her target wasn't Julian—it was me. I scrambled backward, my heel catching on the thick fringe of the Persian rug, sending me crashing down hard onto my back. Martha vaulted over the coffee table, her knife raised high, her face contorted into a mask of pure, murderous rage. "Time to finish what I started in that kitchen, Clara! Let's see how well you handle a bucket of real, freezing blood!"
"Clara!" Julian roared, abandoning his gun-lock stance as he threw himself across the room to intercept her. But Martha was already descending upon me, the heavy blade flashing downward in a blinding arc of steel. Instinct took over; I twisted violently to the side, kicking my legs up with all the strength I had left in my body. My boots caught her squarely in the chest, sending her staggering backward just as Julian slammed into her from the side like a freight train. The two of them crashed heavily into the mahogany bookshelf, sending hundreds of heavy leather-bound law books cascading down in a deafening avalanche of paper and dust.
