Chapter 24 - The Struggle in the Library

Books rained down like heavy hail as Julian and Martha wrestled furiously amidst the debris of the collapsed bookshelf. The rusted butcher's knife skidded across the hardwood floor, coming to a rest just a few inches from my outstretched hand. I scrambled forward on my hands and knees, my breath coming in ragged, painful gasps, and snatched the heavy weapon by its worn wooden handle, tossing it across the room into the roaring fireplace where the flames immediately began to lick at the greasy, blood-stained metal. Across the room, Martha was fighting like a cornered, rabid animal, clawing at Julian’s face with fingernails that had been sharpened to jagged points.
"Get off me, you arrogant bastard!" Martha shrieked, sinking her teeth deep into Julian’s forearm. Julian grunted in pain, his face flushing crimson, but he refused to let go. With a display of raw, athletic strength that surprised even me, Julian grabbed her wrists, pinned her arms violently behind her back, and slammed her chest down against the floorboards. The impact knocked the wind out of her lungs in a sharp, rattling wheeze. "It's over, Martha," Julian panted, blood dripping from the bite mark on his arm as he pressed his knee firmly into the small of her back, immobilizing her completely. "You're going back behind bars, but this time, there won't be any corrupt guards to let you out. You'll die in a concrete box."
Martha spat a mouthful of blood onto the Persian rug, her eyes burning with an unholy fire even as she was completely subdued. "You think this is the end?" she laughed, her voice cracking into a dry, hysterical rasp. "You think I acted alone, Julian? You think a broken old woman managed to bribe half a federal prison and bypass a state-of-the-art security system all by herself? Open your eyes, you arrogant fools! Someone else is pulling the strings. Someone who wants the Sterling name wiped off the face of the earth just as badly as I do!"
May you like
Julian paused, his weight still pressing down on her back, his brow furrowing deeply as her words registered in the charged air of the room. I slowly rose to my feet, steadying myself against the back of the sofa, my heart still pounding wildly in my throat. "What are you talking about, Martha?" I demanded, stepping closer to the struggling prisoner. "Who else is involved? Name them!" Martha turned her head sideways, a grotesque, bloody smile spreading across her face as she looked up at me with pure venom. "You'll find out soon enough, my dear," she whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, conspiratorial tone. "The real master didn't send me here to kill you. They sent me here to deliver a message. And the package is already inside."
Before either of us could process the ominous warning, the distant, muffled sound of a heavy metal door clicking open echoed from the lower basement level of the house. Julian’s head snapped toward the hallway. The smart-home panel suddenly chimed violently—not from the front or back doors, but from the internal corridor leading directly from the underground wine cellar. Someone was already inside the house, and they hadn't broken in from the outside. They had used an authorized security keycard.
