Chapter 13 - The Thunder of Justice

The speed with which the jury returned sent a wave of absolute dread through the defense table.

Arthur Miller buried his face in his hands. Linda began to sob quietly, clutching her rosary beads. Ryan sat frozen, staring blankly at the polished floorboards, his spirit completely broken.

Judge Thomas Vance re-entered the courtroom, his robes flowing behind him. He took his seat at the bench and looked down at the jury foreman, a stern-looking retired schoolteacher sitting in the front row.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Vance asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing tall and holding a sealed manila envelope.

The bailiff retrieved the envelope and passed it to the judge. Judge Vance opened it, reviewed the contents with a slow nod, and passed it back to the clerk.

"The defendants will please rise for the reading of the verdict," the clerk announced.

Ryan, Linda, and Arthur struggled to stand, their leg irons clanking heavily against the floor.

"On Count One: Felony Aggravated Domestic Battery against Ryan Bennett," the clerk read aloud. "How say you, members of the jury?"

"Guilty," the foreman announced firmly.

"On Count Two: Attempted Murder of an Unborn Child against Ryan Bennett... How say you?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Unlawful Imprisonment against Ryan Bennett... How say you?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Grand Larceny against Ryan Bennett and Linda Miller... How say you?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Five: Accessory to Felony Assault against Linda Miller... How say you?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Six through Count Twelve: Obstruction of Justice, Evidence Tampering, and Conspiracy against Arthur Miller... How say you?"

"Guilty on all counts."

The courtroom erupted into quiet gasps and weeping from the public gallery.

Linda shrieked, collapsing into her chair, clutching her chest as bailiffs held her up. Arthur closed his eyes, slumping forward, his legacy destroyed in a string of single words.

Ryan didn't move. He stared straight ahead, a hollow shell of a man who had finally realized that his actions had consequences from which no amount of money or lies could save him.

Judge Vance struck his gavel, commanding total order in the courtroom.

"Silence!" Judge Vance barked. He fixed his terrifying gaze upon the three convicted felons standing before him.

"In my thirty years on the judicial bench," Judge Vance stated, his voice echoing with absolute authority, "I have rarely witnessed such a sickening display of cruelty, cowardice, and systemic depravity. You took a young, pregnant woman into your home, stripped her of her dignity, physically tortured her, and tried to destroy her soul."

The judge looked at Ryan. "Ryan Bennett, you are a predator of the lowest order. You hid behind a suit, your mother's apron, and your family's money while terrorizing a helpless woman."

Judge Vance picked up his pen. "Given the severity of the crimes, the overwhelming evidence, and the complete lack of remorse displayed by the defendants, I am waiving the standard presentence delay. Sentencing will occur immediately."

He read off the sentences:

"Arthur Miller: For obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and financial fraud, you are sentenced to fifteen years in the Illinois State Penitentiary."

"Linda Miller: For grand larceny and accessory to felony aggravated assault, you are sentenced to twenty years in the Logan Correctional Center."

"Ryan Bennett..."

Judge Vance paused, looking Ryan straight in the eyes.

"For felony aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, grand larceny, and attempted murder of an unborn child, you are sentenced to Life in Prison without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Stateville Correctional Center."

Ryan gasped, his knees giving out completely, slamming onto the hard floor as bailiffs caught him under his arms.

"Get them out of my sight," Judge Vance commanded sharply.

The bailiffs dragged Ryan, Linda, and Arthur out of the courtroom. Ryan wept frantically, screaming out Emily’s name, begging for forgiveness, begging for mercy.

Emily didn't even look at him. She kept her eyes fixed on her father, who reached across the gallery rail to hold her hand tightly.

The doors of the holding cell slammed shut, cutting off Ryan’s screams forever.

As the courtroom emptied, District Attorney Lawson and Colonel Reed walked over to Emily and Colonel Bennett.

"It's over, Emily," Lawson said warmly, offering a genuine smile. "They will never see the light of day again."

"Thank you," Emily whispered, tears of profound relief pouring down her cheeks. "Thank you all so much."

Suddenly, Emily gasped sharply, grabbing her abdomen, her face twisting in a sudden surge of physical sensation.

Colonel Bennett immediately caught her, his eyes widening in concern. "Emily! What is it? What's wrong?"

Emily looked up at her father, a mixture of sudden shock and beautiful, radiant joy spreading across her face.

"Dad..." she gasped, laughing through her tears. "My water just broke. The baby is coming."
