Chapter 9 - The Smear Campaign

Three days later, the internet exploded.
It started with small, tabloid blog posts, which were quickly amplified by paid social media bot networks funded by Arthur Miller’s vast wealth. Headlines began popping up across national news platforms and gossip sites:
“Frenzied Allegations: Is the Army Colonel’s Daughter Fabricating Domestic Abuse?”“Exclusive: Mental Health Records of Emily Bennett Raise Questions in High-Profile Assault Case.”“Military Overreach? How an Army Colonel Used Federal Resources to Lock Up a Prominent Chicago Family.”
Articles claimed that Emily had a history of severe psychiatric instability, that the bruises had been self-inflicted during a manic episode, and that Colonel Bennett had used his military power to illegally arrest Ryan and Linda to cover up his daughter’s financial theft.
A coordinated media circus descended upon the gates of Fort Sheridan. News vans lined the perimeter roads, reporters holding microphones, looking for any glimpse of the famous Colonel or his daughter.
Inside the base, Emily sat in her hospital room, staring at the television screen in shock. The news anchor was displaying a modified photograph of her from college, framing her as an emotionally unstable party girl who had targeted Ryan for his money.
"They're... they're lying," Emily whispered, her voice shaking violently as tears filled her eyes. "Dad... look at what they're saying about me! They're telling people I hurt myself! They're saying I tried to ruin Ryan!"
The trauma she had spent weeks processing threatened to break through her fragile defenses once again. She clutched her head in her hands, her chest heaving as a panic attack mounted.
Colonel Bennett immediately walked over, turning off the television with a sharp click of the remote. He sat on the bed beside her, wrapping his strong arms around her shoulders, pulling her close.
"Breathe, Emily," he said firmly, his voice an anchor in the storm. "Look at me. Look at your father."
Emily looked up, her eyes wide with terror. "How can they do this? Why are people believing them?"
"Because cowards fight from the shadows, sweetheart," Bennett explained calmly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "When an enemy knows they can't beat you in a fair fight, they try to poison the water. They want you scared. They want you to break so you won't testify in court."
"I... I can't face them, Dad," she whimpered. "If I go into that courtroom and everyone thinks I'm a monster—"
"Listen to me," Bennett interrupted, his eyes flashing with absolute conviction. "You are not a monster. You are a survivor. You carry the blood of soldiers, Emily. You carry my blood. We do not surrender to lies."
He stood up, adjusting his uniform jacket. "I promised you I would protect you. Now watch me fight for you."
The Colonel walked out of the room, heading straight to the base command center.
Inside the tactical briefing room, Captain Vance and Lieutenant Colonel Evelyn Reed were waiting alongside a team of military cyber-intelligence officers.
"Status, Captain?" Bennett demanded.
"Sir, we’ve traced the origin of the smear articles directly to a shell company in the Cayman Islands funded by Arthur Miller," Vance reported, tapping a key on his laptop to display a complex financial flow chart on the wall screen. "He spent eight hundred thousand dollars over the last seventy-two hours buying out tabloid journalists, hiring bot farms, and leaking falsified medical documents."
"Falsified medical documents?" Bennett’s eyes narrowed.
"Yes, sir," Colonel Reed spoke up. "They bribed a civilian clerk at Emily’s old clinic to alter her medical history, adding fake psychiatric diagnoses. It’s a full-scale character assassination designed to undermine her credibility before the grand jury."
"They think they can play psychological warfare with us," Bennett said, a dark, dangerous smile appearing on his face. "Captain Vance, prepare a press conference."
Vance blinked in surprise. "A press conference, sir? Military policy usually restricts public press briefings on ongoing civilian legal matters—"
"This is no longer a civilian legal matter," Colonel Bennett said, leaning over the briefing table. "This is a direct attack on a military family by an illegal criminal enterprise. I’ve already cleared it with the General."
Bennett looked at Reed. "Colonel Reed, I want every scrap of real evidence unsealed. The video footage from the apartment hallway. The audio recordings of Ryan threatening to kill my grandchild. The unedited medical photos taken by Army surgeons. All of it."
"Sir," Reed warned gently, "releasing those images to the public will be painful for Emily."

"Emily gave me her consent ten minutes ago," Bennett replied quietly. "She told me she wants the world to see the truth. She wants every abused woman out there to know that monsters cannot hide behind money forever."
Bennett turned to Vance. "Set up the podium at the main gate in two hours. Invite every major news network in the country. Let’s see how Arthur Miller’s media campaign holds up against the unvarnished truth."
