Chapter 16 - The Fortress of Family

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the grand parade grounds of Fort Sheridan. Banners fluttered in the warm breeze, and hundreds of military personnel, officers, and civilian families lined the wooden bleachers surrounding the central field.
Today was a momentous occasion: Colonel James Bennett’s formal Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony, marking the end of thirty-five years of distinguished service in the United States Army.
On the sidelines of the field, Emily stood wearing a stunning cream-colored summer dress.
Beside her, holding her hand tightly, was one-and-a-half-year-old Victoria. Victoria was wearing a miniature navy blue dress with tiny white stars, her dark curly hair bouncing as she toddled excitedly beside her mother.
"Look, Victoria," Emily whispered, bending down and pointing toward the center of the field. "There's Grandpa."
Standing at the front of the military formation was Colonel James Bennett. He looked immaculate in his full Army Service Uniform, his chest covered in silver stars, purple hearts, and ribbons reflecting decades of sacrifice.
A high-ranking Four-Star General stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing across the loudspeakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the General announced. "Today we honor a warrior, a leader, and a man of unyielding integrity. Colonel James Bennett has spent thirty-five years defending this nation on battlefields across the world. But his greatest legacy is not measured in medals or rank..."
The General paused, looking over at Emily and Victoria with a warm, respectful smile.
"His greatest legacy is measured in his absolute devotion to duty, to honor, and above all, to his family. When evil threatened his own blood, Colonel Bennett demonstrated what true strength looks like. He did not hesitate. He did not falter. He pulled back the shadows and proved that a soldier's love is an unbreakable shield."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Hundreds of soldiers snapped into a sharp, synchronized salute.
Colonel Bennett stepped forward, received the ceremonial flag, and handed it to his successor. Then, turning to the crowd, his sharp blue eyes locked directly onto his daughter and granddaughter.
He didn't wait for the protocol to end. He marched off the review stand, stepping directly toward Emily and Victoria.
Victoria squealed, breaking away from Emily's hand and toddling forward as fast as her tiny legs could carry her. "Grandpa! Grandpa!"
The formidable Colonel dropped to his knees right on the green grass of the parade ground, catching Victoria in his arms and lifting her high into the air as the crowd cheered and applauded even louder.
"Hey there, my little general!" Bennett laughed, hugging Victoria tight against his uniform.
Emily walked up, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes. Bennett stood up, wrapping his free arm around Emily, pulling her into a tight, warm embrace.

"Congratulations, Dad," Emily whispered, kissing his cheek. "You served well."
"My service in uniform is over, Emily," Bennett said softly, looking down at her with infinite love. "Now my full-time job is being right here with you two."
