Chapter 4 - The Transformation

The private salon inside the Magnificent Mile boutique was closed to the public. Two nervous stylists fluttered around Emily like hummingbirds, pinning, adjusting, and whispering in hushed, reverent tones whenever Vincent’s name was mentioned.

Emily looked at her reflection in the gilded three-way mirror.

The woman staring back was unrecognizable. She wore an emerald-green silk-velvet gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking precision, accentuating her full figure rather than hiding it. The neckline was elegant, framing her collarbones, and her dark hair had been styled into loose, cascading waves that fell over her shoulders like dark silk.

The door opened, and Vincent stepped into the fitting room. He was dressed in a classic tuxedo, his posture commanding and effortless.

He stopped dead in his tracks. The cool, calculating mafia boss vanished, replaced for one fragile second by a man utterly captivated.

"Well?" Emily asked, feeling a sudden flutter of insecurity. "Is it too much? Do I look like I’m playing dress-up?"

Vincent walked slowly toward her, his eyes never leaving hers. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her bare shoulder before resting on her cheek.

"You look," Vincent murmured, his voice thick with emotion, "like a queen who wandered into a room of peasants and forgot she owned the castle."

Emily’s breath caught. No one had ever spoken to her like that. Tyler had spent years pointing out every perceived flaw—every curve he deemed too soft, every laugh he called too loud. In Vincent’s eyes, however, she saw absolute, unwavering reverence.

"Thank you," she whispered, her hand rising instinctively to touch his wrist.

"Remember," Vincent whispered back, his thumb tracing her cheekbone, "tonight isn't about revenge. It's about letting them see what they lost, and letting everyone else see who you truly are."

An hour later, the black sedan pulled up to the grand entrance of the Fairmont Chicago, where flashbulbs blinded the night. Paps and society reporters lined the red carpet, shouting names and snapping photos.

When Vincent’s door opened, a collective gasp rippled through the press corps. The elusive, feared billionaire rarely attended society galas—and he certainly never brought a date. When he offered his hand, Emily took a deep breath, placed her palm in his, and stepped out into the blinding lights of flashbulbs, holding her head high.
