Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Chaos erupted near the ice sculpture. Vanessa pushed her way through the crowd, her face pale under layers of heavy makeup, clutching her phone as her father—who had just rushed over from the head table—shouted frantically into his mobile device.

"What is going on?!" Vanessa demanded, grabbing Tyler’s arm. "People are staring! My father’s partners are calling saying our bank accounts are locked!"

Tyler looked like a man who had just been struck by lightning. He stared from Vincent to Emily, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by sheer, naked panic. "You... you did this," he whispered, pointing a shaking finger at Emily. "You ruined us!"

Emily stepped forward, the emerald silk of her dress rustling softly against the marble floor. She looked down at the man who had tormented her for three years, the man who had told her she was too small, too weak, and too ordinary to ever matter.

"I didn't ruin you, Tyler," Emily said clearly, her voice carrying across the silent, watching room. "You built a house of cards on cruelty and lies, and you were arrogant enough to think no one would ever look at the foundation."

Two federal agents stepped forward, flashing badges, and flanked Tyler on either side. "Mr. Tyler Vance? We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and corporate embezzlement. Please come with us."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Cameras flashed furiously as flashbulb after flashbulb captured the proud corporate golden boy being led away in cuffs past the very society elites he had spent years trying to impress.

Vanessa burst into tears, her social standing evaporating before her eyes as former friends immediately stepped backward to distance themselves from the scandal.

Vincent watched the spectacle with quiet detachment. He turned to Emily, offering his arm once more.

"Shall we dance, Miss Vance?" he asked softly.

May you like

Emily looked at the empty dance floor, then up into Vincent’s dark, unwavering eyes. The heavy weight of insecurity she had carried like a leaden anchor for years suddenly dissolved into nothingness. She placed her hand in his.

"I’d love to," she whispered.
