Chapter 12 - THE NEW COMMANDER OF MY LIFE

Following the Pentagon ceremony, Colonel Hail hosted a quiet celebratory dinner at a high-end steakhouse overlooking the glittering night skyline of Washington, D.C.

Just the two of us sat at a corner booth by the glass, sharing a quiet toast with sparkling cider.

“You know, your grandfather would have been profoundly proud of you, Claire,” Colonel Hail said softly, raising his glass toward mine. “He always said you had the heart of a strategist and the spine of a marine, even when you were just a little girl building science fair projects in your bedroom.”

“He was the only one who ever looked at my ambitions and didn't try to shrink them to fit someone else's comfort zone,” I replied, my voice thick with fond remembrance.

“Well, your horizon is entirely your own now,” the Colonel noted, smiling warmly. “No family anchors. No forced obligations. What are you going to do with your freedom?”

I looked out at the twinkling lights of the capital city, feeling a profound sense of lightness settle deep into my bones.

“I’m heading out to California next month,” I shared, my eyes shining with excitement. “The Department of Defense is partnering with Silicon Valley labs to launch a brand-new initiative on autonomous aerospace defense systems, and I’ve been selected to head the entire engineering division.”

Colonel Hail chuckled heartily, raising his glass higher.

“To the general of her own life,” he toasted.

“To the true chain of command,” I echoed, clinking my glass against his with a crisp, clear ring.
