Chapter 8 - THE PROSECUTOR'S OPENING

Colonel Hail rose smoothly from his chair, buttoning his suit jacket with crisp military precision, and addressed the bench.
“May it please the court, Your Honor,” Colonel Hail began, his resonant voice filling every corner of the wood-paneled courtroom with effortless command. “For over a decade, the defendants before this court engaged in a systematic, premeditated campaign of financial extortion, psychological abuse, and physical intimidation against Captain Claire Monroe while she served her nation both at home and across active combat zones overseas.”
He turned slowly, walking toward the jury box before pivoting to face the defense table.
“They treated Captain Monroe not as a daughter or a sister, but as a personal financial extraction engine. When she enlisted to defend her country, they manipulated her into surrendering her enlistment bonus under false pretenses. When she earned software contract royalties through groundbreaking defense innovations, they demanded tribute. And when she finally stood up to their predatory financial abuse, the defendant Richard Monroe escalated to physical violence—striking an officer of the United States armed forces with the direct, complicit encouragement of his parents.”
Judge Vance’s gaze shifted slowly from the Colonel to my father, then settled squarely on Rick.
“Mr. Richard Monroe,” the judge said, his voice ringing with quiet authority. “Stand up, please.”
Rick swallowed hard, his knees knocking audibly as he slowly forced himself to his feet, slouching slightly.
“Look at me, Mr. Monroe,” Judge Vance commanded. “In your mind, you believed that domestic walls protected you from the laws of the United States. You believed that because you were family, you could exploit, beat, and degrade a decorated officer without consequence.”
Rick opened his mouth, stammering weakly, “Your Honor, she... she was running her mouth, she disrespect—”
“Shut your mouth,” Judge Vance snapped sharply, cutting him off with the force of a thunderclap. “You are no longer in your parents' living room. You are in a federal court of law. And your reign of domestic tyranny ends right here, right now.”

The judge turned his attention back to the prosecutor's table.
“Counsel, the court accepts all submitted federal indictments into the permanent record without objection. Bail for all three defendants is hereby denied as flight risks and severe public safety threats. Federal marshals, take the defendants into custody.”
