Chapter 15 - THE DEFENSE INNOVATION SUMMIT

Three months into my tenure at the Silicon Valley facility, our division was selected to present our autonomous aerospace logistics prototype at the annual West Coast Defense Innovation Summit in San Diego.

The convention center was a massive, bustling hub filled with high-ranking military generals, defense contractors, tech executives, and brilliant engineering minds from across the globe.

As the lead architect, I took the main stage under the glaring white lights of the auditorium, my Class-A dress uniform immaculate, my posture rigid and confident.

I projected our interactive tactical simulation onto the massive fifty-foot screen behind me, explaining how our decentralized software framework could secure supply lines in hostile, GPS-denied environments without risking human lives.

The audience hung on my every word. When I finished my presentation, the auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation. High-ranking Pentagon officials and defense ministers crowded around the stage afterward, eager to shake my hand and discuss immediate implementation contracts.

Standing amidst the flashing cameras and enthusiastic handshakes, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the polished glass of the exhibition booth.

Gone was the bruised, broken-down woman lying helplessly on a hardwood floor in Ohio. Standing in her place was a decorated military officer, a pioneer in defense software engineering, and a woman who commanded absolute respect wherever she walked.

Later that evening, as I stood on the open-air balcony of the hotel overlooking the glittering San Diego harbor, my phone chimed softly.

It was an email notification from the federal prosecutor's office in Ohio.
