Chapter 15 - The Zurich Wire

Midnight in Oak Creek was usually a time of profound, undisturbed silence, but the Dean household was bathed in the harsh, flickering blue light of multiple computer monitors set up hastily across the dining room table. Marcus Vance stood over the screens, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard while three encrypted laptops blinked furiously with incoming data streams from international financial intelligence networks.
"It's happening," Marcus muttered, his voice tense with exhaustion. "Julian just initiated the final wire transfer from the Swiss holding company. Twenty-four million dollars, split into a hundred different shell accounts across the Cayman Islands and Panama."
Blake stood behind him, arms crossed over his chest, watching the cascading lines of hexadecimal code scroll down the monitor. "Can we intercept it?"
"Not directly," Marcus shook his head. "Swiss banking secrecy laws are ironclad. Even with the DOJ backing us, freezing foreign accounts takes weeks through diplomatic channels. By the time the paperwork clears Zurich, Julian will have converted the capital into digital crypto-assets and vanished into thin air."
Emily rolled her wheelchair into the dining room, carrying a tray of hot coffee. She set it down gently on the edge of the table, her eyes reflecting the glowing screens. "What if we don't freeze the accounts?" she asked quietly.
Marcus looked up, blinking in surprise. "Emily, if we don't freeze the money, he keeps his entire fortune. He gets to walk away scot-free, living like a king on a private island while his family's legacy of corruption goes unpunished."
"Money isn't his primary weapon anymore," Emily said, her voice steady and resolute. "Pride is. Julian has never lost anything in his life. Everything was always handed to him on a silver platter—the police protection, the real estate, the absolute immunity. If we try to fight him through international banking laws, we're playing his game on his turf."
Blake turned his head to look at her, a slow, appreciative smile touching his lips. "She's right. Julian isn't running away because he's broke. He's running away because he's desperate to prove he's still untouchable."
"So what's the play?" Marcus asked, leaning back in his chair. "If we aren't chasing the money in Zurich, what are we chasing?"
"The man himself," Blake said coldly. "A ghost doesn't stay hidden forever when his ego is bruised. He wants to know why his empire collapsed. He wants to see the face of the man who took everything away from him."
As if on cue, the primary encrypted terminal on the table emitted a sharp, high-pitched alarm chime. The screen flashed a bright crimson warning: *INCOMING SECURE ENCRYPTED TRANSMISSION - SOURCE: PRIVATE SATELLITE UPLINK, ZURICH, SWITZERLAND.*
Marcus froze, his hands hovering inches above the keyboard. "That's... that's a direct satellite ping. Bypassing all commercial relays."
"Open it," Blake ordered.
Marcus swallowed hard, tapped a single key, and maximized the incoming feed.
The screen flickered, graining out for a second before resolving into a crystal-clear high-definition video feed. Sitting in what appeared to be a luxurious penthouse office overlooking the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps was Julian Sterling Jr. He wasn't wearing a suit; he wore a casual silk robe, holding a crystal glass of champagne, staring directly into the camera lens with a cold, manic smile.
*“Captain Dean,”* Julian’s voice echoed through the dining room’s external speakers, smooth, arrogant, and dripping with thinly veiled contempt. *“I must admit, you’re much more persistent than the local authorities. You dismantled my father’s little operation here in the county. Impressive. Truly.”*
Blake stepped directly in front of the camera, his face carved from granite. "You're a coward hiding behind an ocean, Julian. Your father is in a federal cell, your fixers are in handcuffs, and your empire is dust."
Julian laughed—a sharp, grating sound that filled the quiet room. *“My empire? Captain, my father’s empire was built on local politics and small-time extortion. Child’s play. I’m playing a much bigger game now. And as for hiding? I’m not hiding at all. In fact… I’m coming back.”*
The video feed suddenly shifted, splitting into a second window showing a private Gulfstream G650 jet sitting on an active tarmac under the night sky, its engines whining with takeoff power.
*“My plane touches down in Chicago in twelve hours,”* Julian whispered, leaning closer to the camera lens, his eyes burning with psychotic glee. *“Let’s see if your military tactics work when you don't know who your real enemies are. See you soon, soldier.”*

The screen went black.
