Chapter 20 - The Unseen Observer

Deep in the subterranean parking garage beneath the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago, the fluorescent lights buzzed with a low, irritating frequency. A solitary black sedan sat parked in the darkest corner of the third level, its engine idling quietly, exhaust curling faintly in the damp concrete air.

Inside the car, a man in a dark trench coat sat in the driver's seat, his face shadowed beneath the brim of a fedora. He didn't look like a Sterling loyalist, nor did he look like a corporate lawyer. His hands were gloved, steady, and resting casually on the steering wheel.

On the passenger seat beside him sat a heavy, encrypted laptop screen displaying a live, high-resolution satellite feed of the Dean household in Oak Creek—the glowing porch lights, the silhouette of Blake and Emily through the dining room window, the quiet, peaceful scene of a war finally won.

The man reached out, his gloved finger tapping a single red button on the laptop's interface.

A text file opened on the screen, displaying a single line of encrypted code that began transmitting automatically through an offshore relay node toward an unknown recipient in Geneva, Switzerland.

The man smiled faintly in the darkness, shifted the car into drive, and pulled slowly out of the parking space, disappearing into the shadows of the exit ramp—leaving behind a question that would change everything when the sun rose tomorrow.
