Chapter 16 - The Flight to Chicago

The private aviation terminal at O'Hare International Airport was bathed in the grey, dismal light of a rainy Chicago dawn. Raindrops streaked heavily down the reinforced glass of the VIP lounge windows as Blake stood watching the tarmac, his trench coat collar turned up against the biting wind. Behind him, Marcus Vance was furiously tapping away on a secure tablet, tracking the transponder signal of the inbound Gulfstream G650 from Zurich.

"It touched down ten minutes ago, Blake," Marcus said, his voice tight with anxiety. "Federal Customs cleared the passenger manifest under a diplomatic exemption tag. Julian didn't come alone. He brought a private security detail—six ex-military contractors from a private contractor group based out of Eastern Europe."

Blake didn't turn around. His eyes remained fixed on the wet asphalt where a sleek, black private jet was taxiing toward a private hangar. "Mercenaries," Blake said flatly. "He’s not just looking for revenge anymore. He’s looking for a war."

"We need to call the FBI field office," Marcus urged, stepping closer. "With foreign mercenaries involved on domestic soil, federal jurisdiction is automatic. We can have an entire tactical squad surround the hangar before he even steps off the plane."

"No," Blake replied, his voice absolute. "Federal bureaucracy moves too slow. By the time a judge signs off on a raid warrant, Julian will already be off the airport grounds and heading straight for Oak Creek. This ends where it started—on our terms."

"Blake, be rational," Marcus argued, his hands gesturing widely. "You can't take on six armed contractors alone. Even for a veteran, that's suicide."

"I'm not alone," Blake said softly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy satellite phone, dialing a pre-programmed encrypted frequency. After two rings, a gruff, familiar voice answered on the other end.

*“Stryker actual,”* the voice crackled through the speaker—Master Sergeant Miller, Blake’s former unit commander who had retired to a quiet farm in rural Wisconsin three years ago.

"Miller, it's Dean," Blake said calmly. "I need a quick favor. A few old acquaintances from Zurich are visiting the Midwest, and they brought uninvited guests."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of a shotgun bolt racking into place. *“Coordinates?”*

"O'Hare private hangar four. ETA fifteen minutes. Bring the heavy gear."

*“On our way, Captain. Give ’em hell.”*

Blake hung up the phone and turned to face Marcus, who was staring at him in stunned silence. "Wait... you called your old unit? In the middle of Illinois?"

May you like

"They were looking for a reason to get out of the farm," Blake said with a faint, grim smile. "Come on, Marcus. Let's go meet our guest."
