Chapter 18 - The Final Stroke

When the hammer finally fell at forty-five million dollars—purchased by an anonymous proxy representing a consortium of panicked Wall Street executives—the rotunda was dead silent.

I handed the gavel to the auctioneer, smoothed the front of my emerald green dress, and stepped down from the dais. The crowd parted instantly, pressing themselves back against the marble pillars and velvet ropes to clear a path for me, their eyes averted downward as if looking directly at me might bring down divine retribution.

Marcus met me at the edge of the crowd, offering his arm with a warm, gentle smile that contrasted sharply with the tense, electrified atmosphere of the room. I slid my hand into the crook of his elbow, feeling the solid, reassuring strength of his muscles beneath his jacket.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side, Evelyn," Marcus murmured softly as we walked toward the private exit elevator, away from the glittering, terrified horde of New York’s elite.

"You were never on my bad side, Marcus," I replied, looking up at him with a genuine smile that reached my eyes for the first time all evening. "You were the only one who brought me canvas when all I had left was ash."

As the private elevator doors slid open, revealing the plush, quiet interior that would take us up to the penthouse suite, I took one last look back at the grand rotunda. The forty-five-million-dollar painting still hung under the harsh spotlight, a permanent, indelible scar on the conscience of the city.

Julian Sterling was gone—bankrupt, broken, and erased from the board. His mother’s fortune was tied up in endless litigation. The empire they had built on intimidation and cruelty had crumbled into dust under the weight of its own corruption.

And I—the outcast, the pregnant wife left standing in a torn silk dress—had built a kingdom out of the wreckage.

We stepped into the elevator, the heavy doors sealing shut and cutting off the murmurs of the defeated elite.
