Chapter 2 - The Art of the Trap

The audio clip hung in the air of the grand ballroom like a physical blow.

*“...Once Evelyn is out of the way, Chloe and I take everything, and nobody can stop us.”*

The sentence echoed off the vaulted ceilings for a second time as the automated loop kicked in, before I casually hit stop on my phone screen. The silence that followed was entirely different from the stunned quiet of before. It was the heavy, suffocating silence of high society realizing they were witnessing a public execution of one of their own.

Julian lunged forward, his face mottled with a mixture of rage and terror. He abandoned all pretense of the grieving, patient husband, his hands clawing at the air between us. "Turn that off! It’s a deepfake! She’s psychotic, she edited this, she’s completely out of her mind—!"

"Am I, Julian?" I interrupted, stepping back smoothly, my eight-month pregnant belly acting as a natural shield that kept him from physically overpowering me in front of half a billion dollars' worth of witnesses. "Because the audio engineers from Gotham Sound Labs verified the metadata on this recording three days ago. Shall I play the part where you discuss the specific dosage of sedative you and Dr. Reynolds were slipping into my morning tea?"

At the mention of Dr. Constance Reynolds—the high-priced psychiatrist Julian had hired to diagnose my "paranoia"—a collective gasp rippled through the front rows. Several prominent board members of Sterling Media turned their heads sharply toward Eleanor, whose porcelain-veneered face had gone stiff and gray.

Chloe Vance didn't wait to see how the dominoes fell. She turned on her high heels, hitching up her emerald cocktail dress, and sprinted blindly toward the service exit. She didn't make it five steps before two uniformed security guards—men I had quietly retained and paid double their evening rate an hour prior—blocked her path, gently but firmly placing their heavy hands on her shoulders.

"Excuse me, Ms. Vance," one of them said. "Mr. Sterling requested that all immediate family and executive staff remain available for questioning regarding corporate compliance matters."

Julian whipped around, his eyes wild. "Get your hands off her! Guards! Security, throw these people out!"

"There is no security coming for us, Julian," a calm, deep voice cut through the noise.

From the center aisle, stepping out from beneath the glittering chandeliers, came Arthur Vance—no relation to Chloe, but rather the senior managing partner of *Vance, Sterling & Cole*, the primary legal counsel for Julian's media empire, and more importantly, the executor of my late father’s estate. Arthur adjusted his horn-rimmed glasses, his expression grim as he stroked his impeccably trimmed silver beard. He held a thick, manila leather binder under one arm.

"Arthur," Julian choked out, his voice cracking slightly. "Thank God. You need to help me. Evelyn has lost her mind. She’s fabricating corporate espionage—"

"Julian," Arthur interrupted, his tone chillingly formal. "Shut up. For your own sake, stop talking immediately."

Arthur walked past my trembling, humiliated husband and stopped directly in front of me. His eyes softened with genuine warmth as he looked at my torn dress and my swollen stomach. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a heavy, silk-lined wool overcoat, and gently draped it over my shoulders, hiding the jagged rip in the midnight-blue silk.

"Are you alright, my dear?" Arthur asked quietly.

"I’m surviving, Arthur," I murmured, pulling the coat tight around my chest. "Thank you."

Arthur turned back to face the frozen crowd of five hundred elites, many of whom were now frantically typing on their phones, leaking the scandal to gossip blogs, financial columnists, and Bloomberg terminals across the globe. By morning, Sterling Media’s stock value would open in freefall.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his voice carrying the commanding authority of a man who had buried three hostile takeover attempts before breakfast. "As senior legal counsel, I am officially invoking Clause 14-B of the Sterling Media operating agreement, as well as the emergency guardianship provisions of the Parker Estate. Effective immediately, Julian Sterling is suspended from all executive duties as CEO, pending a full forensic audit of company assets and a psychiatric evaluation."

Julian staggered backward, his knees buckling slightly as he hit the edge of a mahogany cocktail table, sending crystal glasses crashing to the floor. "You can't do that! That's my company! *My* name is on the building!"

"Your name was on the building because your grandfather built it, Julian," Eleanor hissed, her voice suddenly venomous as she stood up from her table, abandoning any attempt to salvage her son's dignity. "You managed to nearly destroy it in three years of reckless spending and pathetic indiscretions." She glared at Julian with pure, aristocratic contempt before turning her gaze to me.

"Well played, Evelyn," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with ice. "You're a colder bitch than I gave you credit for."

"Thank you, Eleanor," I replied smoothly, offering her a sweet, tight-lipped smile. "I learned from the best."

Before Julian could scream, before Chloe could cry, and before the press could swarm the stage, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open. Two federal marshals and an investigator from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office walked briskly down the center aisle, badges gleaming under the lights.

The investigator stopped in front of Julian, pulling a folded warrant from his breast pocket.

"Julian Sterling," the officer said loudly, the words capturing the last remaining shreds of the room's attention. "You’re under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit involuntary institutionalization. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the silver cuffs clicked shut around the wrists of my billionaire husband, I stood tall under Arthur’s heavy coat, watching him dragged past the horrified faces of New York’s elite.

The game was over. And I had won.
