Chapter 30 - The Unfinished Masterpiece

The morning sun climbed higher, flooding the penthouse with a brilliant, golden warmth that chased away every lingering shadow of the past. I sat down at my drafting table, picking up a fine-tipped sable brush and dipping it into a pool of vibrant cobalt blue.
On the large linen canvas before me, the stormy gray background of my previous work was beginning to transform entirely. Over the heavy, turbulent textures of the past, I was painting something breathtakingly new—a sprawling, luminous landscape of open skies, soaring towers, and a single, unyielding figure standing at the helm of a vast, uncharted ocean, looking toward a horizon that stretched out infinitely without limits.
The doorbell chimed softly through the private foyer.
I paused, my brush hovering an inch above the canvas. Marcus was already in the kitchen, but he stopped and looked toward the secure monitor near the elevator.
I walked over to the screen, expecting Arthur with the morning legal briefs or perhaps a courier from the European galleries bringing final contracts for the Louvre installation.
Instead, the camera feed showed a lone figure standing outside the private elevator doors.
It was a young woman, no older than twenty-two, holding a battered leather portfolio against her chest with trembling hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed, bruised with exhaustion, filled with the exact same look of terror, desperation, and quiet defiance that I had worn twelve months ago when I fled my own ruined marriage.
Even through the distorted grain of the security monitor, I recognized the posture of someone whose husband had just torn her life apart, casting her out into the cold streets with nothing left to her name.
Slowly, deliberately, I reached out my hand toward the intercom panel, my fingers hovering just above the silver button as the screen flickered in the silent, waiting air.
May you like
I pressed the button, the intercom crackling to life with a soft click.
"Welcome," I said into the microphone, my voice steady, warm, and carrying the absolute power of a woman who knew exactly what it meant to rise from the ashes. "Come on up. You're safe here."
