Chapter 13 - AN UNEXPECTED INVITATION

Three days had passed since the gala, and the shockwaves were still rippling through the defense tech community. I was sitting at my drafting desk in my home workshop, surrounded by blueprints for a new carbon-composite joint mechanism, when a sharp, authoritative knock echoed from my front porch.
I checked the security monitor. Standing on my doorstep was not a disgruntled ex-fiancé, nor a frantic PR rep, but a man in a crisp, dark suit holding a thick, cream-colored envelope embossed with the seal of the Department of Defense.
I opened the door. "Can I help you?"
The man gave a crisp, respectful nod. "Commander Vance? I’m Commander Davies, personal aide to Admiral Sterling. I have a dispatch for you." He extended the heavy envelope.
I took it, breaking the wax seal with my thumb. Inside was a handwritten note in bold, sprawling fountain pen ink:
*Elena,*
*The Pentagon’s Directorate of Defense Research and Engineering is restructuring its autonomous systems division. We need a director who understands both the battlefield and the burden of titanium. The position is yours if you want to walk back into the light. Report to my office on Monday at 0800.*
*— Admiral Marcus Sterling*
I stared at the paper, my breath catching in my throat. This wasn't just a job offer; it was a vindication of every late night, every painful physical therapy session, and every scar I had earned in service.
Before I could answer Commander Davies, my phone—a clean, burner phone with only three contacts saved—buzzed. It was an unknown number, but caller ID routed it through a local holding facility.
I answered cautiously. "Hello?"
May you like
"Elena?" A voice rasped through the speaker—thin, broken, and unrecognizable as the arrogant tech mogul who had mocked me under the crystal chandeliers. "Elena, please... you have to help me. They’re seizing everything. My accounts are frozen. The SEC is investigating the firm. If you just call Admiral Sterling... if you just tell him it was a misunderstanding... he’ll listen to you."
