Chapter 18 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Despite the overwhelming success of the company and the peace I had finally found, the legacy of Fallujah and the scars of the past occasionally resurfaced in the quiet hours of the night. It was late Friday evening. The rest of the R&D campus was empty, save for the hum of the supercomputers running neural-mapping simulations in the basement lab.

I was sitting at my private office desk, reviewing a complex schematic for a sensory-feedback ankle joint, when the security intercom on my wall chimed softly.

"Commander Vance," the voice of the night duty officer crackled through the speaker. "You have a visitor at the front gate. He’s refusing to leave, and... well, ma'am, you might want to look at the perimeter camera."

I frowned, tapping the monitor on my desk to pull up the live security feed from the front gate.

Standing outside the heavy iron security gates, drenched in a sudden, cold drizzle, was a figure in a heavy, oversized hoodie. The hood was pulled low over his face, but as lightning flashed across the bay, the man looked directly up into the security lens.

It was Julian.

He looked ten years older. His cheeks were hollow, his beard unkempt, his eyes wild and desperate. In his hand, he held a crumpled, water-logged newspaper clipping—the front-page story from six months ago detailing my appointment as Director of Restructuring at the Pentagon.

"Let me in!" his voice echoed through the gate intercom, frantic and cracking with hysteria. "I know she’s in there! Elena! You owe me! You destroyed everything I built!"

The duty officer's voice came back over the comms. "Shall I dispatch base security to escort him off the property, Commander?"

I stared at the monitor, watching the pathetic, rain-soaked wreck of the man who had once treated me like a broken appliance. The anger I once felt was entirely gone, replaced only by a cold, untouchable pity.

"No," I said quietly, standing up from my desk. "Let him in. Bring him to Conference Room B. It’s time to close this chapter for good."
