Chapter 17 - THE REBUILDING

Six months later, the newly christened *Vance-Sterling Defense Dynamics* was operating out of a sprawling, state-of-the-art campus overlooking San Diego Bay. The facility was a beacon of innovation, dedicated entirely to creating advanced neural prosthetics and tactical mobility gear for wounded veterans. We didn't just build machines; we restored lives.
I stood on the expansive second-floor balcony of our primary R&D building, watching a group of young marine amputees test out our newest generation of neural-link carbon joints on the obstacle course below. They were running, jumping, and pivoting with a fluidity that looked entirely natural.
Footsteps approached softly behind me. Marcus walked out onto the balcony, holding two steaming mugs of black coffee. He handed one to me, his silver hair catching the California sun.
"Reports from the Pentagon are in," Marcus said, leaning against the glass railing. "The Joint Chiefs just approved our contract for the entire Pacific Fleet. Every wounded sailor and marine will be outfitted with your Mark IV neural prosthetics by the end of the year."
I took a sip of the coffee, feeling a profound warmth spread through my chest. "It’s not just about mobility, Marcus. It’s about dignity. Giving them back the feeling of being whole."
"Speaking of being whole," Marcus added with a knowing grin, "I heard a rumor that a certain disgraced former tech CEO was spotted working the night shift at a twenty-four-hour diner down in downtown Los Angeles."
I turned my head, raising an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Karma is a remarkably efficient commanding officer," Marcus chuckled. "He gets what he deserves, and we get to change the world. I'd say that's a successful campaign."

"We're just getting started, Admiral," I smiled, looking back out over the brilliant expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
