Chapter 4 - The Gatekeeper

The following afternoon was bright and warm.

Derek spent the morning sleeping in, enjoying the feeling of freedom. By 2:00 PM, he had dressed in a sharp navy blazer and was escorting Savannah toward his sports car parked in the driveway. He was planning to take her to an exclusive country club lunch to show her off to his friends.

As they approached the massive double gates at the end of the long driveway, Derek noticed a slick black sedan idling outside the property line.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit was standing near the stone gate post, holding a thick leather briefcase. Beside him stood two uniformed sheriff's deputies.

Derek slowed down, frowning. He rolled down his driver-side window as he reached the gate.

"Can I help you?" Derek asked, his voice dripping with condescension. "This is private property."

The man in the charcoal suit stepped forward. He had silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and an air of absolute authority that made Derek’s chest tighten unexpectedly.

"Derek Halston?" the man asked calmly.

"Yes. Who are you?"

"My name is Arthur Vance, senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Harrison Legal Group," the man replied, drawing a thick document envelope from his briefcase. "And more importantly, I am Audrey’s uncle."

Derek sneered slightly, trying to regain his composure. "Ah, the protective uncle. Look, Mr. Vance, Audrey overreacted yesterday. She left on her own accord. If she wants to discuss our marriage, she can call me directly instead of sending her family lawyer."

Arthur Vance did not smile. He didn't even blink.

"I am not here to discuss your marriage, Mr. Halston," Arthur said calmly. "I am here to serve you with formal legal eviction documents, an emergency restraining order, and an asset freeze notice."

Savannah, sitting in the passenger seat, gasped. She turned to look at Derek. "Eviction? What is he talking about, Derek?"

Derek laughed loudly, though the sound was hollow. "Eviction? Are you insane? This is my house! I live here! My name is on the front entrance!"

Arthur Vance slowly pulled a stamped county property deed from the file and handed a copy through the window.

"If you read line four of the master title deed, Mr. Halston," Arthur said softly, "you will see that Grandview Estate is owned 100% by the Vance Family Heritage Trust, established in 1984. Audrey is the sole primary beneficiary and trustee."

Derek's eyes scanned the document wildly. His hands began to shake. "No... no, I pay the mortgage! I pay $8,000 a month!"

"You pay rent into a trust management account, Mr. Halston," Arthur corrected smoothly. "A rent agreement that expired three months ago and was never renewed. You hold zero ownership stake in this land, this structure, or the furnishings inside."

Savannah turned to Derek, her face pale, her eyes wide with shock.

"Derek..." Savannah whispered, her voice laced with sudden disbelief and anger. "You said this house belonged to you!"
