Chapter 7 - Behind the Curtain

Ten miles away, in a sprawling, private country estate nestled in the rolling hills of Goochland County, peace reigned.
Audrey sat in a sunlit nursery decorated in soft sage green and warm cream tones. She was rocking gently in a plush velvet armchair, cradling baby Maisie as the newborn slept peacefully.
The door softly opened, and her mother, Eleanor Vance, walked in carrying a tray with warm tea and fresh pastries.
"How is she doing?" Eleanor asked gently, placing the tray on a side table.
"She’s an angel, Mom," Audrey murmured, smiling down at her daughter. "She slept four hours straight."
Eleanor sat down on the ottoman beside Audrey, placing a comforting hand on her daughter’s knee. "Arthur called. The eviction notice has been fully served. Derek and his mother have vacated the Grandview property."
Audrey took a long, quiet breath. For the first time in six years, she felt her shoulders drop from her ears. The heavy weight of tension that had lingered in her chest for years was finally beginning to lift.
"I tried so hard, Mom," Audrey admitted softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I gave him six years. When he wanted to start his logistics company, I signed the trust guarantees so he could feel proud. When his mother wanted to host lavish parties to impress her friends, I let her use the house without ever reminding her whose name was on the deed."
"You have a kind heart, Audrey," Eleanor said firmly. "But kindness is a gift to be given to those who appreciate it, not a weakness to be exploited by arrogant men."
"I thought he was just busy," Audrey whispered. "I thought he was stressed about work. But to leave me in the hospital... to bring another woman into our home while I was giving birth to his daughter..."
"He showed you who he really was," Eleanor said gently. "And now, you are showing him who you are. A Vance woman."
A knock on the door drew their attention. Arthur Vance walked into the room, holding an iPad and a neatly bound leather dossier.
"Good evening, ladies," Arthur said warmly. He leaned down to kiss Audrey's forehead before turning to the documents. "Audrey, the preliminary audit of Halston Logistics is complete."
Audrey looked up. "And?"
Arthur’s eyes turned cold and precise. "It’s worse than simple infidelity, my dear. Derek wasn't just using your trust to back his loans—he was actively siphoning funds from joint tax reserves to pay off personal debts, luxury car rentals, and jewelry purchases for his mistress."

Audrey’s brow furrowed. "Is that legal?"
"It is criminal fraud," Arthur answered plainly. "And by tomorrow morning, the State Attorney's office will be receiving a copy of this audit."
