Chapter 6 - The Mother-in-Law’s Panic

Thirty minutes later, the interior of the mansion was in utter chaos.

Evelyn Halston was running through the grand hallway, her silk scarf trailing behind her as she threw open closet doors and filled suitcases with clothes.

"This is illegal! It’s extortion!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I am going to call my attorney! I know city council members! They can't throw us out of our home!"

Derek was sitting at his mahogany desk in the study, his hands buried in his hair. His phone was ringing non-stop. Notifications were flashing across his laptop screen:

ALERT: Halston Logistics Corporate Account Frozen.ALERT: American Express Executive Line Suspended.ALERT: Auto Lease Payment Declined for BMW M5.

"Mom, stop screaming!" Derek shouted, slamming his hand onto the desk. "My business accounts are locked! My credit cards aren't working!"

Evelyn stopped in the doorway of the study, her face pale and drawn. "What do you mean, locked? What about your savings?"

"There are no savings!" Derek yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "Every cent I made was reinvested into the business or used to pay for our lifestyle! I thought Audrey’s trust would always back my loans! I didn't think she even knew how the trust worked!"

"That quiet little girl..." Evelyn whispered, her hand moving to her throat as realization finally dawned on her. "She never talked about money... she never wore flashy jewelry..."

"Because she didn't need to!" Derek screamed, tearing his hair. "Her family built Vance Enterprise fifty years ago! They own half the commercial real estate in Richmond! She kept her maiden name legally because the trust required it! I thought it was just a modern habit!"

A heavy knocking resounded at the front entrance.

Derek walked out to the foyer, his legs feeling like lead. Standing at the door were two locksmiths equipped with heavy toolboxes, accompanied by the sheriff's deputies.

"It is 4:30 PM, Mr. Halston," the lead deputy said, looking at his watch. "You and your mother need to step outside the perimeter now."

"Please, just give us until tomorrow," Evelyn pleaded, her usual dignified composure completely shattered. "Where are we supposed to go?"

"I suggest a hotel, ma'am," the deputy replied coldly. "Step outside, please."

Evelyn grabbed two overstuffed suitcases, while Derek picked up his briefcase containing his laptop and personal documents. As they stepped across the threshold onto the porch, the locksmiths immediately went to work, removing the heavy brass lock cylinders from the front doors.

As the heavy iron gates rolled shut behind them, locking them out on the public sidewalk, Evelyn looked at Derek with wide, terrified eyes.

"Derek..." Evelyn whimpered. "What are we going to do now?"

Derek didn't answer. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed Audrey's number again.
