Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The sterile smell of antiseptic and fresh linen greeted Emma as she settled into a quiet private room at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sarah Vance, an obstetrician who had monitored Emma’s pregnancy from the beginning, adjusted the fetal monitor belt across Emma’s abdomen. The rhythmic, galloping heartbeat of their daughter filled the room, steady and strong.
"Everything looks remarkably stable, Emma," Dr. Vance said with a reassuring smile. "Your blood pressure is elevated, which is entirely understandable given the trauma you've experienced, but the baby is reacting well and showing no signs of distress. How are you holding up?"
"I'm surviving, Sarah," Emma whispered, resting her hand on her belly. "More than surviving."
The door swung open softly, and Claire Morgan walked in, carrying a leather briefcase that looked like armor plates. The brilliant defense attorney wore a sharp charcoal pantsuit, her expression a mix of fierce professional pride and deep personal concern.
"The precinct just called," Claire announced, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "Grant spent the last two hours trying to invoke every legal loophole in the book. He tried to claim diplomatic immunity from common sense, but unfortunately for him, that’s not a statute."
Emma offered a faint, tired smile. "Did he make bail?"
"Judge Harrison denied bail pending the arraignment tomorrow morning," Claire said, opening her briefcase and laying out a stack of pristine documents. "Between the physical assault charge, the documented financial dissipation of marital assets, and the audio file pulled directly from your smart home hub—capturing the entire altercation, the slap, and his threats—his legal team is already scrambling. They know they have no defense."
Claire slid a document across the tray table. It was an emergency protective order, granting Emma exclusive possession of the family home, temporary custody rights, and an immediate freeze on all joint corporate and personal accounts controlled by Grant.
"He tried to hide millions in offshore accounts tied to shell corporations under Vanessa Lane's name," Claire noted, tapping a financial ledger. "Amateur hour. We’ve already flagged every single transaction. By the time the civil court hears our petition for full asset forfeiture, Grant won't even be able to afford a decent cup of coffee, let alone a high-priced defense attorney."

Emma looked out the window at the distant city skyline, watching the amber glow of the setting sun wash over the buildings. For months, she had lived in the suffocating shadow of Grant’s dominance, walking on eggshells to protect a life that was built on hollow lies. Now, looking at the papers before her, she felt an overwhelming sense of lightness.
The storm had broken, and the air was finally clean.
