Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The mahogany boardroom on the forty-second floor of Whitaker & Associates was usually a place of quiet intimidation. Today, it was an arena of absolute reckoning.
Senior partners sat in tense silence around the polished oak table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, the founding senior partner and Grant’s longtime mentor—a man whose loyalty to the firm's reputation exceeded all personal attachments. Standing near the projector screen was Claire Morgan, accompanied by corporate forensic accountant David Vance.
The heavy oak doors opened, and junior partner Vanessa Lane walked in, expecting her usual seat beside Grant. Instead, she found every eye in the room fixed on her with cold hostility.
"Arthur, what is the meaning of this?" Vanessa demanded, attempting to project an air of injured innocence. "Where is Grant?"
"Grant is currently residing in a holding facility awaiting his felony arraignment," Arthur Sterling said, his voice like grinding stone. He gestured to the screen behind him, which lit up with high-resolution bank statements, corporate wire receipts, and internal compliance violations. "And you, Ms. Lane, are standing in the middle of a corporate embezzlement and ethics investigation."
Vanessa’s face lost all its color. "Those documents... those are private—"
"They are corporate documents detailing the systematic channeling of firm development funds into unauthorized personal accounts registered under shell entities you control," David Vance explained smoothly, clicking to the next slide, which displayed Vanessa’s signature alongside Grant’s on multiple fraudulent transfer forms. "Furthermore, internal HR complaints regarding your conduct have been cross-referenced with firm policy breaches."
Arthur leaned forward, resting his weathered hands on the table. "You used firm resources to finance personal luxury acquisitions, including designer apparel and jewelry purchased while representing active firm accounts. Whitaker & Associates has zero tolerance for criminal liability. Your employment is terminated effective immediately. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building."
Vanessa looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally among the men and women who had smiled in her face just days before. Every gaze was averted. The illusion of power she had shared with Grant evaporated into nothingness. Without a word, she turned and hurried out of the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the floor in a panicked retreat.
Arthur turned his attention back to the screen, where a new document appeared—a proxy transfer of voting shares assigned by Emma Whitaker, holding the majority controlling interest through family equity trusts established by her late father.

"As per the bylaws and the equity holdings secured under Mrs. Whitaker," Arthur announced to the stunned partners, "effective immediately, the firm will undergo restructuring under an independent board of oversight. Grant Whitaker’s partnership status is permanently revoked."
The boardroom was dead silent. The empire Grant had fought so ruthlessly to build had collapsed from within, dismantled by the very wife he had underestimated.
