Chapter 5 - The Arraignment

The courtroom was packed with reporters, curious onlookers, and legal professionals eager to witness the spectacular downfall of one of the city's most prominent corporate attorneys. Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse steps, capturing every angle of the scandal that dominated morning headlines across the nation.

When the bailiff called the court to order, Grant Whitaker was led in through the side doors. Gone was the immaculate, tailored Italian suit and arrogant smirk. He wore standard detention orange, his hair slightly disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and darting anxiously toward the gallery.

He scanned the rows of spectators, searching for a familiar face, someone who would look at him with pity or offer a lifeline. Instead, he found rows of cold, detached observers—former colleagues who wanted nothing to do with his disgrace.

And then, sitting in the front row beside Claire Morgan, he saw her.

Emma.

She wore a simple, elegant navy maternity dress, her posture upright and serene. Her face had healed completely, save for a faint trace near her lip, but her expression radiated an unshakable calm. She looked like a woman who had already won a war before the first battle was even finished.

Judge Thomas Henderson adjusted his glasses, reviewing the massive stack of evidentiary files before him.

"Mr. Whitaker," the judge began, his tone biting and severe. "You stand charged with felony domestic assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice. How do you plead?"

Grant’s defense attorney, a stressed man sweating through his collar, stood up quickly. "Your Honor, entering a plea of not guilty at this time. We request a reduction in bail, citing—"

"Denied," Judge Henderson interrupted flatly. "Given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming audio and physical evidence presented by the prosecution and independent investigators, and clear indications of witness intimidation and asset flight, the defendant poses a significant flight risk and a direct threat to public safety. Bail is revoked. The defendant will be remanded to custody until trial."

The gavel slammed down with a resounding crack that echoed through the quiet courtroom.

Grant gripped the wooden partition of the defense table, his knuckles turning white. He turned his head toward the gallery, locking eyes with Emma. For a fleeting second, he tried to mouth her name—a desperate plea for mercy, for the old Emma who would have stepped in to save him from embarrassment.

Emma did not flinch, did not look away, and did not offer a single smile of triumph. She simply looked at him with profound, absolute indifference.

The man who had once believed he owned her world was now entirely invisible to her.
