Chapter 12 - The Poisoned Wire

By noon, Lucas’s phone had rung twenty-seven times. The board members of Sterling Enterprises, junior executives, and society columnists were circling like vultures. Evelyn’s team had executed their media leak with precision. Headlines across the Atlanta business wire were already whispering: *Sterling Family Turmoil: Heir Accused of Freezing Out Matriarch in Shady Takeover.*

Inside Roy’s workshop, Naomi had set up a makeshift command center. Her laptop was open, tethered to her mobile hotspot, while Lucas paced between the wooden workbenches, listening to the speakerphone on speaker.

"Lucas, she’s demanding a formal press conference," said Marcus Cole, Lucas’s trusted personal attorney and long-time confidant. "Evelyn’s lawyer called my office an hour ago. She offers a settlement: you reinstate her black card, assign sixty percent of the offshore trust to her sole oversight, and issue a joint statement stating Naomi acted without authorization when the Key West villa was canceled."

Naomi raised her eyebrows, a sardonic smirk touching her lips. "She wants me to take the blame publicly so she can preserve her country club bridge circuit."

"Marcus," Lucas said, his voice flat. "Does she honestly believe I don't have the digital audit trail?"

"She thinks you won't use it, Lucas," Marcus replied solemnly. "She’s your mother. In her mind, family shame is a one-way weapon. She believes you will swallow broken glass before you let the public see her true face."

"She miscalculated," Lucas said. "What is our legal standing on the trust freeze?"

"Impenetrable," Marcus answered without hesitation. "Your father structured the Sterling Trust so that sole signatory authority transferred to you on your thirtieth birthday, contingent upon annual forensic approval. Her allowance was an executive courtesy, not a legal mandate. When she charged $120,000 for a luxury private retreat without prior board quorum, she violated the secondary bylaws. Legally, she's standing on quicksand. But socially and commercially? She’s trying to cut your throat before you can show the judge the knife."

Naomi leaned over the speaker. "Marcus, does the Fulton County courthouse docket publish video evidence exhibits when filed with a motion to dismiss?"

There was a brief pause on the line. "If entered as an unredacted exhibit in open court or filed in support of an anti-SLAPP motion, yes. It becomes public matter immediately."

Naomi turned the laptop screen toward Lucas. On it was a high-definition video file transferred from the resort’s private security management. It showed the pristine glass threshold of the Key West villa. In vivid color and crystal-clear audio, Evelyn Sterling was seen sneering, drawing back her designer heel, and violently kicking Ellen Vance’s scuffed, taped suitcase into the gravel while screaming at the top of her lungs.

"She wants a war of public perception," Naomi said, her eyes blazing with calm fury. "Let’s give her the front row seat."
