Chapter 14 - Cold Whispers in High Places

Evelyn did not withdraw the petition. Narcissism rarely surrenders to logic; it merely escalates.
By two o'clock that afternoon, Evelyn’s public relations operative had bypassed the legitimate business press and gone directly to local daytime television and sensationalist blogs. An edited audio clip had been leaked—a five-second snippet of Lucas saying, *'I don't care where you sleep tonight, you're not getting another dime.'* The headline screamed: *Cold-Blooded Son Leaves Philanthropist Mother Homeless After Disputed Family Trip.*
Inside the luxury condo Naomi and Lucas owned in Buckhead, the intercom buzzed relentlessly. Reporters were gathered outside the security gates.
Naomi sat on the sofa, watching the television report unfold. Her mother, Ellen, called from the farm, her gentle voice laced with deep concern.
"Naomi, honey... Roy wants to drive down there with the truck," Ellen said, her southern cadence slow and steady. "He says he’s got half a mind to tell those news people how that woman really behaves."
"Don't you dare let him, Mama," Naomi insisted, smiling softly despite the strain. "Dad doesn't need to get dragged into the mud with Evelyn. She wants a circus. If you step into the tent, you just become one of the clowns."
"We just hate seeing them say those awful things about you, baby. You worked so hard for your firm, and now they're saying you married Lucas for his trust."
"Let them talk, Mama. The louder they yell, the farther they fall when the floor drops out."
Lucas walked into the living room, hanging up his phone. His expression was granite. "Marcus just filed the response."
"Did you attach the footage?" Naomi asked.
"Not just the footage," Lucas said, taking a seat beside her and pulling her close. "We attached the forensic accounting audit from the last seven years. My mother hasn't had personal equity in Sterling Holdings since 2018. She’s been living on a high-interest credit rollover, borrowing against properties that were already mortgaged to the hilt."
Naomi looked at him, astonished. "She has no money?"
"None of her own," Lucas revealed. "The Buckhead mansion? It’s titled to a holding company that defaulted on its property taxes six months ago. She was relying on the Key West trip to impress a consortium of European investors she was trying to swindle into a phony boutique development."
Naomi let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "She wasn't angry because we canceled the villa. She was angry because without that luxury villa to show off, her investors would realize she was broke."

"Exactly," Lucas said, his eyes darkening. "And now, those same investors have just seen the court filing."
