Chapter 28 - The Counter-Strike

Julian didn't run. A man of his arrogance never ran in public.

He stared at Lucas, then at Naomi, a cold, terrifying smile slowly spreading across his face despite the whispers erupting around them in the ballroom.

"You think you won, don't you?" Julian whispered, so low only the four of them could hear. "You think a few civil liens and an expired contempt charge can hold a man who owns three prime ministers and half the banking board in Zurich?"

He leaned in toward Naomi, his breath cold against her ear. "The Marshals won't hold me past sunrise, little girl. My lawyers in Washington are already on the phone with the Deputy Attorney General. But while you were busy playing Perry Mason with thirty-year-old pension records... who was watching your sanctuary?"

Naomi’s blood ran cold. "What did you do?"

Julian checked his gold Patek Philippe watch with agonizing slowness. "It’s eight-thirty-five. Forty minutes ago, a commercial demolition crew operating under a county condemnation order broke through the western gate of the farm in Rabun County."

David took a sudden step forward, his fists clenching, but Lucas caught his arm. "What are you talking about, Julian?" Lucas growled.

"The county water reservoir expansion project," Julian murmured smoothly, straightening his bow tie. "The county board of commissioners approved the emergency eminent domain seizure of the southern eighty acres of the Vance-Bennett property at six o'clock this evening. A private development firm—wholly owned by my Luxembourg syndicate—purchased the municipal bonds. The heavy machinery is already on the land, Lucas. By midnight, your precious family timber will be cleared, and the spring that feeds your father-in-law's farm will be capped with two hundred tons of concrete."

Martha let out a strangled gasp, clutching David's arm. David’s eyes burned with a fury so deep and terrible it seemed he might tear Julian apart with his bare hands right there on the parquet floor.

"You bastard," David said, his voice shaking with raw, primal anger. "That land has been in my family for four generations!"

"It was," Julian corrected with a mocking bow. "Now it's municipal water infrastructure. You took my ledger, Naomi. So I took your dirt. Let's see whose victory lasts longer."

Julian turned and walked calmly toward the double doors, where two men in dark suits—clearly federal marshals—were just stepping into the foyer. Julian didn't resist. He held out his wrists with an amused, aristocratic sneer, completely confident that his money would open the cell doors before breakfast.

"Lucas!" Naomi said, her voice frantic, the courtroom composure shattering into raw panic. "The farm! The old oak grove... the spring!"

"Come on!" Lucas yelled, grabbing her hand and turning toward the exit. "We have two hours to get to the mountain!"
