Chapter 23 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLY

The silence in Harrison Vance’s office was so absolute you could hear the distant hum of the building's ventilation system. Vance’s face, which had maintained an air of untouchable arrogance just moments before, turned the color of stale ash. His eyes darted from the woman in the navy coat to the manila folder in her hand, his composure fracturing like thin ice under a heavy boot.

"Agent Sterling," Vance managed to choke out, his voice losing its deep, resonant baritone and cracking slightly at the edges. "This is a private meeting. You have no jurisdiction here without a formalized subpoena or prior notification to senior counsel."

"Actually, Harrison, I do," Agent Sterling replied, stepping smoothly past Ben and me. She tossed her own folder onto the center of the desk, right on top of my phone. The folder slid open, spilling out a cascade of bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and digital signature logs bearing the letterhead of *Vance, Sterling & Holt*. "When a regional banking institution flags suspicious, multi-state asset shuffling linked to a dormant trust, our financial crimes division tends to take a very proactive interest. Especially when those funds trace directly back to elderly dependents who never gave informed consent."

I stared at the documents, my heart pounding against my ribs. I looked over at Ben, whose mouth was slightly open in stunned disbelief. We hadn't called the Attorney General’s office. We hadn't even filed the formal police report yet.

"Who..." I started, my voice catching in my throat. "How did you..."

Agent Sterling glanced over her shoulder, offering me a tight, reassuring smile. "Your cousin Marcus has a very guilty conscience. And an even stronger desire to see his mother and Julianna stop ruining what's left of this family. He walked into our field office in Chicago three nights ago with a flash drive containing every internal email, forged memo, and secret payoff ledger this firm tried to bury."

Vance slammed his hand down on the desk, the sound echoing sharply through the cavernous office. "This is an unauthorized witch hunt! Those files were acquired illegally, in violation of client-attorney privilege!"

"Client-attorney privilege doesn't protect criminal conspiracy, Harrison," Agent Sterling retorted, her voice ice-cold and razor-sharp. She stepped right up to his desk, leaning in close so their eyes were level. "And right now, your firm is looking at federal mail fraud, forgery, and elder financial abuse. Unless, of course, you’d prefer to cooperate fully, hand over the original physical trust documents currently locked in your basement vault, and point us toward every single piece of real estate Julianna and Clara illegally seized from your clients over the past decade."

Vance’s chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths. He looked at Agent Sterling, then down at the papers, and finally over at Ben and me. The mighty architect of our family's misery looked small, trapped behind his expensive mahogany desk, realizing that his empire of paper-thin lies was finally burning to the ground.

"You'll... you'll need a formal court order for the vault keys," Vance whispered, his defiance completely evaporated.

"I already have one," Agent Sterling said, pulling a second, folded document from her coat pocket and slapping it down right in front of him. "Signed by a federal judge an hour ago. Now, shall we go downstairs, or would you prefer the federal marshals escort you in handcuffs?"
