Chapter 29 - A NEW TRADITION

By New Year's Eve, the atmosphere in the Miller household had completely transformed. The heavy, suffocating gloom that had dictated every holiday gathering for as long as I could remember was gone, replaced by a vibrant, pulsating energy of new beginnings.
Instead of hiding away from relatives or enduring backhanded compliments about our careers, our appearance, or our financial status, our living room was filled with laughter, music, and the people who actually mattered. Grandma Helen, Ella, Ben, our mother, and a few close, genuine friends from the neighborhood had gathered to ring in the new year properly. There was no formal, stiff seating arrangement, no hidden scales by the chairs, and no toxic matriarchs casting judgment from the head of the table.
We had set up a long, casual buffet table in the dining room, loaded down with all of our favorite comfort foods—rich, decadent dishes made with love, entirely free of guilt or anxiety.
As the digital clock on the mantle ticked closer to midnight, our mother walked out from the kitchen carrying a massive, beautifully frosted celebration cake bearing the words: *TO NEW BEGINNINGS*.
"Alright, everyone, gather round!" Mom called out, her face glowing with a radiant, youthful happiness we hadn't witnessed in a decade. She stood at the center of the room, raising a flute of sparkling cider high in the air. "Before the clock strikes twelve, I want to say something."
The room quieted instantly, all eyes turning toward her with warm affection.
"For years, this house held a lot of pain," Mom began, her voice steady and filled with quiet emotion. Her gaze swept around the room, landing lovingly on Ben and me. "We let outside voices dictate our worth, our happiness, and our home. But this year—thanks to the incredible strength, courage, and determination of my children—we took our lives back. We proved that family isn't about blood tied to cruelty and control. It’s about love, loyalty, and standing together when the world tries to tear you down."
Applause erupted around the room. Ben raised his glass toward our mother with a proud, beaming grin, and I felt a fresh wave of tears prick my eyes—not tears of pain or stress, but tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
"To the future," Mom continued, her voice ringing out clearly as the final seconds ticked away on the clock. "To a home filled with peace, laughter, and truth!"
"To the future!" everyone cheered in unison.
Ten... nine... eight... seven...
We began counting down together, our voices rising in joyful harmony, completely unbothered by the past, entirely ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
Three... two... one...
