Chapter 16 - The Manhattan Ambush

By Monday morning, the lobby of Vanguard Wealth Management was a bustling hive of high-powered executives, international clients, and security personnel who maintained an atmosphere of impenetrable exclusivity. Into this temple of corporate finance walked Julia Sterling, her hair disheveled, her baby carrier strapped awkwardly across her chest, and a look of wild desperation in her eyes.

She bypassed the security turnstile by tailgating a group of visiting analysts, marching straight toward the main elevator banks before a towering security guard in a crisp navy suit intercepted her.

"Ma'am, excuse me. Do you have an appointment or a building badge?" the guard asked, his tone polite but firm.

"I don't need a badge, I need to see Patrick Sterling," Julia snapped, trying to push past him. "He's my brother! I'm immediate family! Now let me through or I'll start screaming right here!"

The commotion instantly drew the attention of nearby clients and junior associates, who paused in their brisk walking to stare at the disheveled woman and the crying baby.

At that exact moment, Patrick stepped out of the private executive elevator, flanked by two senior partners and a legal consultant. He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, reviewing a tablet as he walked, completely in his element.

The silence that fell over the lobby was instantaneous.

Julia spotted him immediately. "Patrick!" she screamed, breaking away from the guard and rushing toward him. "Patrick, don't you dare walk away from me!"

Patrick stopped in his tracks. He lowered his tablet slowly, his expression shifting from mild professional concentration to a cold, razor-sharp stillness. The two senior partners beside him exchanged bewildered glances, looking from Patrick to the frantic woman approaching him.

"Patrick," Julia panted, stopping a few feet away, her face flushed with anger and exhaustion. "Your parents are about to lose their house. Your nephew and I are about to be homeless. And you’re walking around here playing CEO like you have no family at all! Look at us! Is this what you wanted? Are you happy now?"

The lobby was dead silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vent ten floors up.

Patrick didn't flinch. He didn't look away, nor did he raise his voice. He simply looked at his sister with an expression of profound, absolute indifference—the kind of look reserved for a business transaction that had long since been written off as a total loss.

"Ma'am," Patrick said, his voice carrying clearly across the marble-floored lobby. "I don't know who you are, and I certainly don't appreciate being harassed in my place of business. Security, please escort this individual off the premises immediately."

Julia’s jaw dropped in sheer horror. "What? Patrick, it's me! I'm Julia! Your sister! Are you pretending you don't know me?!"

Two security guards stepped forward, gently but firmly taking her by the arms.

"You have the wrong person," Patrick said coldly, turning his back on her without another word. "Come along, gentlemen. Let's review the acquisition metrics in the conference room."

As Patrick walked away toward the private elevators, his posture straight and unyielding, Julia screamed curses at his back—a pathetic, echoing sound that faded into the hum of the Manhattan morning as the heavy security doors closed behind her.
