Chapter 24 - The Leverage of the Damned

"Because you're the only one who survived," Julia whispered, her knees trembling as she clutched the baby tighter to her chest. "Brenda found out who bought the house, Patrick. It wasn't just a random investment firm. It was *them*—the corporate restructuring group you work for. Vanguard & Sterling."

Patrick’s breath caught in his throat. The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis.

*Vanguard & Sterling.*

He thought back to the text message he had received two nights ago: *We found out who bought the house, Patrick. And she's coming to New York.*

It wasn't a threat from an unknown stalker. It was an internal corporate memo. The distressed residential portfolio that Vanguard’s acquisitions division had quietly scooped up in New Jersey three weeks ago—the very portfolio containing the deed to 424 Maplewood Drive—had crossed his desk last week for standard legal review, and he had blindly approved it without reading the property address.

"You knew," Patrick said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "You knew all along."

"I found out when the eviction notice was served," Julia cried, shaking her head frantically. "The corporate seal on the paperwork... it had your firm's name on it, Patrick! You bought our house! You threw us out on the street!"

"I didn't know the address," Patrick snapped back, taking a sharp step forward, his towering frame finally intimidating her into silence. "Do you have any idea how many thousands of properties my firm acquires every quarter? I don't memorize every slum property your family bankrupted themselves over!"

"But you can fix it!" Julia pleaded, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, ignoring the sleeping infant as she clutched at the hem of Patrick's trench coat. "You're a senior associate now. You have pull with the partners. You can sign a transfer deed, you can give the house back to Mom and Dad, or at least give us enough money to rent a proper place—"

"Stop right there," Patrick interrupted, his voice cutting through the lobby like a razor blade. He reached down and forcefully yanked his coat free from her grip, stepping back as if her touch were toxic.

"Patrick, please! For the baby!" she sobbed, rocking back and forth on the cold floor.

"When I stood on that stage seven years ago, waiting for my name to be called while my parents sat in a banquet hall celebrating your baby shower, did anyone think of me?" Patrick asked, his eyes burning with years of suppressed rage. "When I worked eighty hours a week through brutal midterms just to pay for my own tuition while Dad bought you a brand-new sedan, did anyone care about *my* future?"

Julia opened her mouth, but no words came out.

"You built your entire life on my broken back, Julia," Patrick continued, his voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled fury. "And now that the bill has finally come due, you expect me to play the dutiful, forgiving brother? You expect me to jeopardize my career, my reputation, and my peace of mind to bail out the people who treated me like garbage?"

He turned his back on her, walking toward the private elevators without looking back.

"Where are you going?!" Julia screamed hysterically from the floor, her voice bouncing off the glass walls. "You can't just leave me here! I have nowhere to go!"

"Call Brenda," Patrick’s voice echoed back coldly as the elevator doors slid open. "You two have plenty in common."
