Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Elite

The ballroom had transformed into a silent theater of terror for the privileged. Marcus turned his gaze from his daughter to face the crowd, his eyes resting coldly on Eleanor and Chloe. “General... General Hayes?” Chloe stammered, her voice losing all its razor-sharp edge as she clutched her new husband’s arm. “You... you can't just barge in here. This is a private wedding reception! My father is a major donor to—" “Your father is currently under federal investigation for financial fraud and tax evasion, a file my command transferred to the Department of Justice this afternoon,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, his voice dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees. He signaled to an intelligence officer behind him, who stepped forward with a thick manila folder.

The federal investigator didn't wait for permission. Panic rippled through the crowd. Several businessmen reached for their phones, only for a tactical technician to raise a signal jammer, cutting off all cellular transmissions within the perimeter. Nathan Whitmore stepped forward, trying to summon the arrogance of a privileged heir. “This is an outrage! My wife's million-dollar ring was stolen by her, and you're protecting a criminal!” Marcus turned his head slowly toward Nathan. “Stolen? You speak of a custom diamond ring insured for one million dollars, purchased last Tuesday using offshore shell accounts linked directly to the same fraudulent capital flows currently freezing your father-in-law’s assets.”

Chloe gasped, turning pale. “How... how do you know about that?” Because Vivienne’s military intelligence unit had been tracking the Whitmore family's money laundering operations for six months as part of an inter-agency corruption probe. Vivienne hadn't just been a government worker; she had been the lead tactical analyst building the case against them all.
