Chapter 6 - The Confession of the Ring

The weight of the federal presence crushed whatever defiance remained in the ballroom. Eleanor clutched her pearls, her breath coming in shallow gasps as she realized the terrifying magnitude of who they had spent three years tormenting. Vivienne stood beside her father, wrapped in his heavy coat, her posture upright and unbreakable.

Marcus stepped closer to Chloe, towering over her. “My daughter gave you three years of grace. Three years of enduring your petty, small-minded insults while she handled national security threats that would make your privileged family soil yourselves in terror. And tonight, you chose to escalate from verbal harassment to public assault, physical destruction of property, and false accusations of grand larceny.”

“I—I didn't mean...” Chloe stammered, tears of sheer panic finally spilling down her carefully contoured cheeks. “It was just a joke! A prank to put her in her place!” “Assaulting a pregnant federal officer is not a prank, Mrs. Whitmore,” Marcus replied coldly. He nodded to a female federal marshal standing near the side doors. “Search the bride’s private dressing suite upstairs. We have reliable intelligence that the insured ring was never lost at all.”

Within five minutes, the marshal returned holding a velvet jewelry pouch. She walked straight up to the general and handed it over. Marcus opened it, revealing the massive diamond ring sparkling under the lights. He held it up for the entire ballroom to see. “It appears,” Marcus announced dryly, “that the bride misplaced her ring in her own private vanity case before walking down the aisle, chose to stage a public theft, and directed a malicious mob toward an innocent woman to feed her own ego and malice.”

The guests stared at Chloe in horror and disgust. The illusion of perfection shattered completely.
