Chapter 11 - The Echo of Unbroken Glass

The morning sun cut through the sheer white curtains of our new kitchen, casting warm, golden slats across the butcher-block table. For the first time in my life, mornings didn't smell like dry-cleaned wool, expensive espresso beans, and forced anxiety. They smelled like freshly brewed cinnamon coffee, warm pancakes, and peace.

Ethan was sitting at the corner of the table, his laptop open as he reviewed his college acceptance letters and scholarship packages. He had earned every single one of them through sheer grit and late-night studying under a flickering desk lamp.

"Mom," Ethan called out without looking up from his screen, though I could hear the faint smile in his voice. "Stanford just sent through the final housing grant details. They’re covering the residential fees for the entire first year."

A wave of emotion so profound washed over me that I had to set the spatula down on the counter and press my hands against the edge. I closed my eyes, remembering the baby shower just a few months ago—the biting, venomous words Chloe had hurled at him, the humiliating way she had treated him like an unwanted guest at her high-society circus, and how her husband, Richard, had stood by with a smirk, treating my son like dirt beneath his expensive Italian leather shoes.

They had thought money and social status made them gods. They had believed that by crushing Ethan’s spirit publicly, they would cement their untouchable legacy.

Look at us now.

"That’s amazing, sweetheart," I said, walking over and placing a hand on his shoulder. He leaned back against me, his broad shoulders strong and steady. "You worked harder than anyone I know to get that. You earned every single inch of it."

"We earned it," Ethan corrected me softly, turning his head to look up into my eyes. "We did it together."

Before I could answer, my cell phone buzzed loudly on the counter. It was a restricted number. I ignored it, letting it ring out to voicemail. But a few seconds later, it buzzed again. Then a text message popped up on the screen.

*Unknown Number:* "Please, Clara. Just listen for two minutes. Everything is falling apart. Richard is gone. The police are everywhere. Please, I’m begging you."

I stared at the screen, my heart skipping a beat. It was Chloe.
