Chapter 14 - The Weight of Consequences

Chloe stared at Ethan as if he had struck her across the face. The arrogance that had defined her entire existence for twenty-five years was finally cracking, leaving behind only the terrified shell of a woman who had never worked a day in her life or faced a single genuine consequence.

"You're enjoying this," Chloe whispered, horror creeping into her bloodshot eyes. "You're enjoying watching me lose everything."

"No, Chloe," I stepped forward, my voice cutting through the morning air like a blade. "We aren't enjoying it. We simply don't care. For years, you and the rest of the family treated us like ghosts—invisible when it was convenient, and punching bags when you needed to feel superior. When you insulted my son at your baby shower, you crossed a line that can never be uncrossed."

"I was pregnant! Hormones!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking as panic took over completely. "People say things they don't mean!"

"No," Ethan corrected her sharply, stepping past me onto the porch. "You said exactly what you meant. You believed every single word. The only difference now is that you’re the one paying the price for the world you built."

Before Chloe could scream another defense, the rumble of a heavy engine interrupted us. A sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb of our quiet suburban street. Two men in sharp suits stepped out, walking with the practiced, purposeful stride of federal investigators.

Chloe spun around, her face draining of what little color she had left.

"No," she breathed. "How did they find me?"

The lead investigator stopped at the foot of our driveway, pulling a leather badge case from his jacket pocket.

"Mrs. Sterling?" the agent asked, looking directly at Chloe.

She backed up a step, tripping over the edge of our welcome mat—the simple coir mat that said *Welcome* in faded black letters. She caught herself against the wooden railing, looking frantically between the federal agents and us.

"I have nothing to say to you without my attorney," Chloe stammered, raising her hands defensively.

"Your attorney dropped your husband's case twenty minutes ago once the asset forfeiture orders went through," the agent replied smoothly, pulling out a set of documents. "We need you to come down to the field office for questioning regarding the offshore shell companies registered in your name."
