Chapter 19 - The Open Highway

The suburbs melted away into rolling green hills, and soon the open expanse of the interstate stretched out before us like a blank page waiting to be written. The windows were rolled down, letting the warm late-summer wind whip through our hair as classic rock played softly on the radio.

Ethan drove with both hands on the wheel, his eyes fixed steadily on the horizon where the sun was beginning to dip, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and gold.

"You know, Mom," Ethan said over the hum of the tires on the asphalt, glancing sideways at me with a grin. "Stanford is going to be amazing, but I'm going to miss this kitchen table."

"We'll get a new one," I laughed, resting my arm against the open window frame. "Bigger, sturdier, and with even more knife scars."

"Deal," Ethan nodded, steering us smoothly into the middle lane as the highway opened up into a vast, multi-lane stretch heading west.

We had left behind a world built on glass houses, venomous whispers, and hollow status symbols. We had walked away from millions of dollars, high-society circles, and family approval that always came with impossible strings attached. In exchange, we had gained something infinitely more powerful: our dignity, our peace of mind, and an unbreakable foundation built entirely on our own terms.

As the miles ticked away beneath our tires, I felt a deep, profound sense of gratitude wash over me. The pain of the baby shower, the humiliation of Chloe’s insults, and the wreckage of Richard’s crimes felt like a lifetime ago—a distant nightmare from a completely different reality.

Ahead of us lay California, university dorms, late-night study sessions, new friends, and a future unburdened by anyone else's expectations.
