Chapter 19 - The Evening Ledger

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a breathtaking canopy of violet, orange, and gold across the North Shore sky.
Ernest sat at his heavy oak roll-top desk in his study, the window cracked open just an inch to let in the cool, sweet scent of evening jasmine blooming in the garden below. On the desk lay his final ledger of the day—not a record of corporate debts or legal disputes, but a simple, handwritten journal detailing the names of the people who had brought light back into his life.
He dipped his fountain pen into the dark blue ink and wrote neatly across the crisp white page:
*May 15. Assets: True friends, restored home, a community built on honesty. Liabilities: None.*
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts, and Arthur walked into the study, holding two glasses of aged scotch.
"Thought you might want a proper toast, old friend," Arthur said, setting one glass down on the desk before pulling up a chair. "To new beginnings."
Ernest picked up his glass, looking across the room at the framed photograph of Lucy smiling brightly in the sunlight.
"To new beginnings, Arthur," Ernest said, clinking his glass against his friend's. "And to never trusting a balance sheet that hasn't been audited by the heart."
