Chapter 28 - The Final Boardroom

Three weeks later, in the heart of downtown Chicago, the glass-and-steel monolith that had once housed Vance Global Industries—the empire Ernest had spent fifty years building from scratch—was filled with an uneasy, tense silence.
In the grand executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, the mahogany table was surrounded not by corrupt executives or scheming relatives, but by federal receivers, court-appointed auditors, and bankruptcy judges.
At the head of the table sat Ernest Vance.
He wore a tailored charcoal suit that fit him with razor-sharp precision. His white hair was neatly combed, his posture erect, and his eyes as sharp as polished steel. To his right sat Arthur, serving as legal advisor and corporate witness; to his left sat Agent Vance and a team of federal prosecutors.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, and two federal marshals escorted a pale, disheveled Julian Vance into the room. Julian looked twenty years older than his actual age, his expensive silk suit wrinkled, his hands cuffed tightly in front of him with steel restraints. He had been intercepted trying to board a private charter flight to Zurich out of a small regional airstrip in northern Wisconsin.
Julian stopped at the foot of the table, his eyes locking onto Ernest with a mixture of bitter hatred and profound disbelief.
"Ernest," Julian spat out, his voice cracking slightly as he struggled against the handcuffs. "You arrogant old bastard. You really think you can just march in here and take back what I spent decades planning?"
Ernest did not stand up. He slowly leaned forward, resting his forearms on the mahogany table, looking down at his estranged former partner with absolute, crushing indifference.
"Julian, you always were a poor accountant," Ernest said, his voice echoing clearly off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the sprawling Chicago skyline. "You spent forty years plotting revenge for a corporate defeat you brought upon yourself, while I spent fifty years building something real. You tried to use my own flesh and blood—my son—as a weapon to destroy me. But you forgot the fundamental rule of business: never play a game where you don't own the ledger."
Julian clenched his jaw, opening his mouth to hurl another insult, but Agent Vance stepped forward, pressing a federal seizure document directly into his chest.
"Julian Vance, you are formally served with a comprehensive asset forfeiture order," the agent announced coldly. "Every corporate entity, real estate holding, offshore trust, and personal asset associated with *Veritas Holdings* has been seized by the United States government, with restitution ordered directly to Ernest Vance."
Julian staggered backward, the color draining entirely from his face as the reality of his total, absolute ruin finally crashed down upon him. The marshals grabbed him firmly by the arms and dragged him out of the boardroom, his desperate curses fading down the hallway until the heavy oak doors clicked shut.
Silence descended once more over the grand boardroom.

Ernest leaned back in his leather chair, looking out across the magnificent city skyline bathed in the autumn afternoon sun. The battle was over. The accounts were settled.
