Chapter 15 - The Caterer’s Confession

The following Monday, the forensic investigation delivered a breakthrough that turned our financial dispute into a criminal nightmare for Tessa.

Marcus Vance called an emergency meeting at his downtown office. When Luke and I sat down in the leather armchairs, Marcus slid a printed transcript across the glass table.

“The catering company’s insurance provider got wind of the dispute,” Marcus said, leaning back and lacing his fingers together. “Once they realized that Tessa was attempting to shift liability onto their kitchen for ‘negligent food preparation,’ their legal counsel turned over the entire internal communication log to protect themselves.”

“What does it say?” I asked, my throat tight.

“Look at the timestamps from three days before the party,” Marcus instructed.

I looked down. My eyes scanned the black-and-white text messages between Tessa and the kitchen manager:

*Tessa (Oct 12, 2:14 PM): "I need you to swap the oat-flour treats on the display for the standard patisserie tower. My sister-in-law is paranoid and makes ridiculous demands. She won’t know the difference once it’s set up. It’s half the price."*

*Kitchen Manager (Oct 12, 2:22 PM): "Ma'am, the mother specifically sent an allergy waiver form indicating severe tree nut and peanut cross-contamination risks. The patisserie tower uses shared almond paste."*

*Tessa (Oct 12, 2:25 PM): "I am the event coordinator and the account holder. I am authorizing the substitution. If the kid has a fit, her mother can pull an apple from her purse. She needs to learn that the world doesn’t cater to her."*

The room seemed to spin.

It hadn't been an oversight. It hadn't been a careless mistake or an administrative mix-up. Tessa had knowingly, deliberately ordered cross-contaminated food containing Sophie’s primary allergen, intending to deceive us so she could pocket the fifteen-hundred-dollar price difference while humiliating me in front of our friends and family.

Luke gripped the edge of the conference table so hard his knuckles turned stark white. A low, ragged breath escaped his chest.

“She knew,” Luke whispered, his voice cracking with a horrifying mixture of grief and fury. “She knew Sophie could have died if she took a single bite of that pastry.”

“This crosses the threshold into reckless endangerment of a minor,” Marcus stated with chilling precision. “We aren't just defending a civil lawsuit anymore, Luke. We are filing a criminal complaint with the police department tomorrow morning.”
