Chapter 28 - Bloodlines and Betrayals

Tessa collapsed onto the bottom step of the grand staircase, burying her face in her hands. "Mother told me to do it! She said if Sophie’s mother made a scene, we could use it to force Luke to sign over his voting shares! She said nobody would actually get hurt, that Sophie would just eat the safe food her mother brought!"

"You fool!" Eleanor hissed, turning on Tessa with the ferocity of a cornered animal. "You weak, incompetent little fool! I gave you one task—one simple task to secure the Sterling majority before the audit—and you leave a digital trail like an amateur!"

"She left a trail because she’s your daughter, Eleanor," Luke said, his voice dripping with contempt. "You raised her to believe that money erases consequences. You raised her to believe that other people are props in the Sterling theater. But the curtain just came down."

Clara opened the lockbox, pulling out an original, notarized document bearing the seal of the Denver Probate Court from 1994.

"This is the unrevoked codicil to Thomas Sterling’s personal trust," Clara announced, holding it before Eleanor’s horrified eyes. "Before my uncle died, he filed a copy with the state ombudsman under seal. It states that if Eleanor Sterling ever attempted to alter the lineage rights of his descendants, the entire Blackwood Ridge portfolio—including the mineral rights and the forty-million-dollar water reservoir contract currently leased to the county—reverts immediately and exclusively to his firstborn child."

Eleanor stumbled back against the wall, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "No... that parcel is worthless dirt..."

"The county approved the reservoir expansion three days ago, Mother," Luke said coldly. "The state contract is worth sixty-five million dollars. And you don't own a single square inch of it. Clara does."

Eleanor looked between Luke, Clara, and me. Her pristine world, built on decades of psychological abuse, social leverage, and calculated cruelty, was dissolving in front of her eyes.

"You think you’ve won?" Eleanor whispered, her gaze locking onto me with pure, venomous malice. "You think you can take my family from me, Maya? You’re a middle-class nobody who married into my son’s life. You think you can protect that sick, defective child forever?"

Luke didn't hesitate. He stepped between Eleanor and me, his hand reaching out to grab the brass doorknob of the main entrance, pulling it wide open to the cold evening wind.

"Get out," Luke said.

Eleanor blinked, stunned. "What did you say?"

"This house is registered under the Sterling Holdings master trust," Luke said, his voice flat, absolute, and final. "Clara and I hold sixty-two percent of the voting shares as of five o’clock this evening. Tessa has forfeited her board seat by admitting to corporate malfeasance on recorded audio. You have twenty-four hours to pack your clothes, Eleanor. After that, the locks are being changed, and the private security detail will treat you as a trespasser."
