Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Purge

The hammer fell on Wednesday morning at the quarterly meeting of the Sterling-Hart Asset Management Board.
The boardroom was situated on the thirty-second floor of the downtown financial center, surrounded by sweeping panoramic views of the city skyline. Eleven trustees and senior shareholders sat around the mahogany conference table, including three of Luke’s late father’s oldest business partners.
Eleanor sat at the head of the table, wearing a dark navy suit, projecting an aura of supreme confidence. Beside her sat Tessa, whose face was pale and blotchy despite thick foundation.
Luke and Marcus Vance entered precisely as the clock chimed ten.
“Luke is not scheduled to address the board today,” Eleanor said immediately, raising her hand to dismiss him. “As managing trustee, I call this meeting to order and move to strike his attendance.”
“Actually, Eleanor,” spoke Arthur Vance—the senior founding partner, who happened to be Marcus’s distant uncle and the original executor of the trust, “Luke requested an extraordinary evidentiary session under Section 4 of the bylaws. And as the co-trustee of the secondary accounts, he has every legal right to present findings.”
Luke stepped forward and opened a leather portfolio. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't show anger. He simply distributed twelve identical spiral-bound dossiers to the members of the board.
“Inside those folders,” Luke said, standing tall at the end of the table, “you will find three distinct sets of forensic records. First, the IP verification proving Eleanor used an expired medical power of attorney to forge my authorization on an eighty-thousand-dollar commercial liability line.”
Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
“Second,” Luke continued, “you will find bank records demonstrating that over the past twenty-four months, Tessa has diverted over one hundred and forty thousand dollars of secondary trust distributions into her personal event-planning accounts under the guise of ‘consulting fees’—monies that were earmarked for the educational trusts of all five grandchildren.”
Several board members gasped, flipping frantically through the audited receipts. Arthur Hart’s face darkened to a thunderous scowl as he glared at Tessa.
“And third,” Luke added, his eyes fixing directly on Tessa, “you will find the certified criminal complaint filed with the district attorney’s office yesterday charging Tessa Sterling with reckless endangerment and food tampering involving a minor.”
“This is a private family matter!” Tessa shrieked, slamming both palms down on the table as tears of humiliation finally spilled down her cheeks. “He’s doing this to destroy me because of a birthday cake!”

“No, Tessa,” Arthur Hart barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls like a gunshot. “You did this to yourself when you treated this trust like your personal piggy bank and risked a child's life in the process.”
Arthur turned to the recording secretary. “Record this: By unanimous shareholder petition, Eleanor Sterling is hereby suspended from all executive duties pending full forensic audit, and Tessa Sterling’s commercial guarantees are revoked immediately. The trust will cooperate fully with the District Attorney.”
